Do you have a proper job?

Because I’m a freelancer (and always have been) I see the world differently from many people. I’ve never had an occupational pension or holiday entitlement or been given promotion.
But there are some upsides. I’ve never had to:-
Apply for my own job
Take a psychometric test
Make a spreadsheet
Been told someone won’t share their slides with me because they didn’t like my predecessor
Been represented as a small box on an org chart
Been restructured
Been outsourced
Manage someone who applied for my job
Manage someone hired by someone else
Sign off someone else’s expenses
Buy a Secret Santa present
Are you jealous? What would you add to this list?
On the other hand, think about all that it’s possible to achieve when you are part of something larger…
I’ve never created something that means others can take out a mortgage or sorted accommodation for a vulnerable family or helped someone else achieve a formal qualification. My endeavours don’t directly lead to a device or product or service that means others can live more safely or securely.
So next time you’re a bit fed up with organisational shenanigans, do try and think of the bigger picture.
(But also take a moment to consider how you might be able to reduce those irritating little - or not so little - burdens that others might have to bear.)

3 个月Like sex comedy it’s all in the timing surely!? I loved working for for big organisations - institutions even! - and now at an age and stage where freelancing is about the confidence I have to give what I have to people who really need it without constraint! I loved the learning from employment but I am also loving this chapter of my life which truly helps others grow and thrive in whatever their environment is at the moment….. must come and see you soon! 3 个月I stayed at a blue chip for 20 years. Learnt so much and was well paid for my hard work. Taking a generous redundancy deal including final salary pension at 50 set je up for a comfortable early retirement? indulging in?travel, diving, golf and leisure while still healthy and young enough to enjoy it.

3 个月I miss nothing. But I wouldn't have missed my time in the bigger organisations for anything. They allowed me to learn from some outstanding people, win, lose, grow, find the work I find most fulfilling, and form wonderful relationships that continue to provide joy. I could not be loving the work I do now without all that 'big' stage experience in my backpack. Do both, I say.
