When I first started out as a writer, around 8th grade, I was especially taken by the Beat poets- not that I really understood them. Nonetheless, I would turn a wastebasket upside down and beat on it like a drum while reciting a poem by Gregory Corso or Alan Ginsberg as best could. Later on, I would darken my room and type out my poems in the dark. They really weren't very good and I knew it- but I kept on with it.
The next year I made a new friend who, at a young age, was deeply into literature. I began to read a wide range of poets - from classical to romantic to neoclassical. Fascinated, I began to study verse and a wide range of poetry and became very attracted to the neoclassical poets. Eventually, I settled to the reality that T.S. Eliot and W.B. Yeats were my favorite poets because they had something in their writing that I recognized- a reaching out in a space beyond the ordinary imagination.
And, after all this reading and study, my poetry started to shift- into something I could not recognize from my reading but still embodied the mixture of verse patterns and unique formats consistent with neoclassical poetry.
Still later, I decided to actually be a dramatic poet and wrote two complete dramatic verse plays in high school. It was during this time, I experienced a certain strangeness in what was happening to me as a poet and playwright. I was beginning to write beyond my perceivable capacities. It was as if things were flowing into me in an unexpectedly organized way and with ideas that I had appreciated but seemed way above my normal reflections. Quite frankly, it seemed like a miracle. And as I have transited through the years- writing stage plays, screenplays, novels, songs, non-fiction books, web content, articles, etc.- in all these mediums, I have experienced a similar phenomenon- and with it, often coupled with a sense of mission.
Eventually, I brought this into my career as a writer, creating proprietary, collaborative and client-based projects.
I don’t want to be too mystical about this, although I fundamentally believe there is another level of consciousness that favors manifestation. Still, whatever the source of your feeling that your project is vital and import, it is your passion that will first connect us. If it truly seems right to both of us and the price seems right, then lets head on to the future together.
