Do You Have The Most In-Demand Skills for 2024? ?? | Introducing James Andrews Technology! ?? | The JARS Guide to SMART Goals ??

?? Revealed: The most in-demand skills for 2024!

LinkedIn have released their latest report of the most in-demand skills for professionals in 2024, revealing that while the world is realising what AI can do, businesses are recognising the uniquely human skills required in the workplace. As LinkedIn VP Aneesh Raman notes, following the release of the analysis, ‘’People skills are going to come more to the centre of individual career growth and people-to-people collaboration is going to come into the centre more for company growth’’.? These findings marry up with a recent LinkedIn survey which found that 90% of global execs agree that soft skills are more important than ever.

The report, which analysed data from LinkedIn’s 1 billion members globally, measured demand by the share of skills possessed by members who have been hired or received a Recruiter InMail recently and skills listed in paid job listings. This data highlights just how quickly the world of work is changing, with members adding 680 million skills to their profiles in 12 months, an 80% increase year-on-year.

So, which skills came out on top?

Skills such as communication, customer service and leadership ranked in the top 3 most in-demand skills in 2024, continuing to be business-critical qualities in employees as we progress further into the age of AI.?

The survey did, however, also consider the ‘top skill of the moment’, measuring the skill with the biggest difference in demand within a recent six-month period. The top-ranking skill in this category was adaptability, an indispensable skill that provides organisations and teams with stability in times of change, maintaining the ability to drive maximum impact. Given that since 2015, skills for roles have changed by 25% on average, and look set to reach 65% by 2030, coupled with research that shows more than half of LinkedIn members hold jobs that will be disrupted or augmented by AI, this looks to be a skill more critical than ever!

Did you start the year with a jam-packed list of aspirations, projects and tasks to complete or achieve, but you now have no idea where to start, or how to get everything ticked off? If so, you’re not alone! To maximise your chances of success, it's a good idea to think about setting SMART goals – Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound. But just how can setting SMART career goals can set you up for success, and how do you implement them??

? Specific

When setting career goals, specificity is key. Vague or ambiguous goals make it challenging to create a focused plan of action. Instead, clearly define what you want to accomplish. Ask yourself questions like:

  • What exactly do I want to achieve?
  • Why is this goal important to me?
  • What specific steps do I need to take to accomplish it?

For example, rather than setting a broad goal like "advance in my career," you might specify, "Secure a management position within my current department within the next two years."

? Measurable

Measurable goals allow you to track your progress and determine whether you're on track to achieve them. Establish concrete criteria for measuring your success. Consider:

  • How will I know when I've achieved this goal?
  • What quantifiable metrics can I use to track my progress?
  • What milestones can I set along the way?

Using the previous example, you could measure progress by tracking the completion of relevant training programs, gaining specific skills, or receiving positive feedback from supervisors.

? Achievable

While it's essential to set ambitious goals, they must also be realistic and attainable. Consider your current skills, resources, and circumstances. Ask yourself:

  • Is this goal within my reach given my current abilities and resources?
  • What steps can I take to acquire any necessary skills or resources?
  • Are there any potential obstacles, and how can I overcome them?

Setting achievable goals ensures that you maintain motivation and momentum throughout the journey. It's okay to aim high, but be sure to break down larger goals into smaller, manageable tasks.

? Relevant

Relevance is about ensuring that your goals align with your values, aspirations, and long-term objectives. Reflect on whether your goals contribute to your overall career vision and personal fulfillment. Consider:

  • How does this goal align with my career aspirations and values?
  • Will achieving this goal bring me closer to my long-term objectives?
  • Is this goal meaningful and relevant to my current role or desired career path?

Choose goals that resonate with you personally and professionally, as they will be more motivating and fulfilling to pursue.

? Time-bound

Without a deadline, goals can linger indefinitely, leading to procrastination and lost momentum. Establishing a timeframe creates a sense of urgency and accountability. Consider:

  • By when do I want to achieve this goal?
  • What specific deadlines can I set for each milestone?
  • How will I prioritise my time and resources to stay on track?

Setting a timeline helps you stay focused and disciplined, enabling you to allocate your time and energy effectively.

Have you tried setting SMART goals before? Or will you be implementing these into your routine this year? Let us know in the comments! ??

Softer skills being more in demand isn't a surprise at all. They are key for success in any role, and can often be key to hiring the right talent, as they are usually the things that can't be taught!
