Do you have the deadliest disease on the planet? (and how to treat it)

Do you have the deadliest disease on the planet? (and how to treat it)

I'm talking about metabolic syndrome. It's caused by insulin resistance. Here are the signs*:

  1. Elevated fasting blood glucose (>100mg/deciliter)
  2. Elevated blood pressure (>130/85)
  3. Waist circumference >35 inches in women, >40 inches in men
  4. High Triglycerides (>150mg/deciliter)
  5. Low HDL (<40mg/deciliter)

4 things you need to make the diagnosis:

  1. A tape measure
  2. A blood pressure cuff
  3. A CMP and lipid panel from Quest or LabCorp

2 main ways to treat it:

  1. Decrease excess dietary carbohydrates, especially in the form of ultra-processed foods and sugar sweetened beverages. Less carbs = less need for insulin.
  2. Contract your skeletal muscles. Skeletal muscles are the biggest glucose utilizer in your body and can dispose of glucose independent of insulin during exercise. 2 ways: lift weights and move.

*3/5 required to make the diagnosis.

As you also know, there is much more involved in metabolic syndrome, including drug management, laboratory testing, imaging, and long-term health optimization, but doing these 2 things will change your life!
