Do You Have Clients or Patients? Then You Need to Write a Book!
Medical doctor, dentist, therapist, lawyer, or trainer—it doesn’t matter what service you provide a client or patient. If you impart specialized expertise and advice, you might want to write a book. Being a published author may benefit you in any of several ways.
Get to Know Yourself—and Help Your Clients
Writing a book requires you to think critically, carefully, and thoroughly about your field and your unique work within it. When you do so, you not only craft a stellar book, but you also develop new perspectives or new ways of expressing your perspectives for client or patient appointments. You can be confident you’re up-to-date in the latest studies, processes and procedures, and compliance matters. While outlining, researching, and writing, you pay a deeper level of attention to who you treat or work with, why you do what you do, and what you know. That level of contemplation and reflection will translate into even more informed appointments.
Introduce Your Idea, Method, or Technique
A sought-after professional, doctor to lawyer to plumber, is an expert in something specific—a particular type of research, a certain type of procedure, and a specific type of case. Few things say, “I’m an expert on X,” like a book does. Also, seeking your services can seem cost-prohibitive to some. They might benefit greatly from your work but never even set up an initial appointment out of fear that they won’t be able to afford you. So, your book is a nearly universally accessible way for someone to learn more about you and what you can do for them.
Make It Easy for People to Get to Know You
Where do you land in your organization’s staff chart? How far down the results list is your name when someone searches online for your field? In most metros, take a step in any direction, and a potential client or patient will bump into a doctor, lawyer, or therapist. That is even truer in the internet age when people can seek the services of a professional based anywhere in the country or even the world. A book can help you stand out not only by expressing your idea, education, and experience but also by conveying your voice. If your personality resonates with a potential client or patient, they may be more likely to hire you.?

Attract the Media
The 24/7 media always needs stories and experts to comment on stories. You publishing a book may be a story to the right media outlet, or it may position you as an expert so that when they need someone at a moment’s notice to respond to an unfolding story, they’ll know to reach out to you. Your clients or patients are likely going to be interested in buying your book, but with media attention, you can increase your reading audience, possibly grow your client list, and maybe develop another professional tributary off your primary career, like giving speeches on your work.
?Enhance Your LinkedIn Presence
As a published author, you’ll not only have an extra line on your CV (and writing a book might even count toward some professional requirements), but you’ll also be able to connect with different groups on LinkedIn, widening your network of people who may end up interested in your in-person services or in offering you new, related opportunities.
