The following is an Excerpt from my book, Win at Home First
I have many great memories from my childhood, but one, in particular, continues to stand out as my kids get older and my career develops.
My dad was at all my athletic events. I had two siblings, and we all played sports. They too remember him being at all of their games. I know he must have missed some, but we remember him at our games more than not being there.
I can still see him standing at the sidelines near the edge of the field I was on. For soccer, he was near the goal we were trying to score on. For baseball, he was on the first base side to watch me play second base.
My dad didn’t have a cake job either. He always had a sales management job that demanded he perform as well as travel. But to the best of his ability, my dad organized his travel to be home for our games and any other family events we had.
My dad’s priority was his family.
We put our time wherever our value is.
Those who win at home have boundaries. The leaders I know who are winning at home have a set time they go home from work. They minimize the time they are on their computers at night and on the weekends. Great leaders have daily and weekly boundaries for their work and home life. Yes, occasionally they have to work late or on the weekends, but it is the exception for these leaders and not the norm.
FEAR AND CONTROL
Those who strive to win at work believe they can’t miss any meeting, skip out on a work happy hour, or be slow to respond to an email, even during the weekend. When we get this mindset, we are being driven by two forces: fear and control.
We fear if we don’t work hard enough then we will get fired, not get the next promotion, or not get enough new clients. When this fear kicks in, we then overswing believing we can control the situation. We tend to think if we’re going to do well at work, we need to work all the time. We fall victim to the lie that we have 100 percent control over our business. We think we completely control our own destiny. But obviously, this kind of thinking could not be further from the truth.
I see this play out in my life as I build my coaching practice when I think my business will not grow unless I am constantly sending emails to potential clients. Recently I was reminded how that is not the case when I had bronchitis for two weeks. I did not send any prospect emails because I was in bed sick, yet I landed two new clients from referrals during that time.
Don’t get me wrong, we need to work hard while we are working, but we don’t need to work around the clock. A verse I remind myself and clients of is Psalm 127:1
“Unless the Lord builds the house, those who build it labor in vain. Unless the Lord watches over the city, the watchman stays awake in vain.”
We have to believe that God has the night shift. If we are doing the right things during business hours, and the occasional overtime for projects or deadlines, then we must believe in God’s provision for our life.
Conquering our fear of provision and performance will allow us to step away from work to engage in the other areas of our life.
