Do You Have Black Lines Around The Edges Of Your Carpet?

Do the edges of the carpet in any of your rooms look like the picture in this article?  Those black lines (edges) can be awfully unattractive.  There's good news and bad news about what you see.

The good news is that it can be remedied.  It's not an issue of poor house keeping.

The bad news is that the issue isn't necessarily correctable with a DIY project over the weekend.  The term for those black lines is actually filtration soiling.  It involves the heating and air system in your home as it relates to how air moves in and out of the walls.  Air is constantly moving around your home.  When it does, it is supposed to be distributed as evenly as possible using the vents that blow heat or cool air into the room and into the wall cavities using the return vents.

When this system of air movement gets out of balance, air can begin to move in and out of the walls at the bottom of the wall where it meets the carpet.  When this happens, you have air passing back and forth over the edge of the carpet 24 hours/day.  The carpet is actually acting as a filter (just like the one you replace on a regular basis) and catching and holding the dirty particles in the air; the dust and allergens that we wipe off our counters, wood floors, etc.

When this happens over a long enough period, those dirt and dust particles will eventually bond to the carpet and permanently stain the edges.  Hopefully, you can see why this is not a vacuuming issue.  With air passing over the edges of the carpet constantly, you'd have to vacuum constantly with an edging tool to keep up.
