“Do you have any questions for us?”

Toward the end of a job interview, it's common to be asked, “Do you have any questions for us?”

This is your golden opportunity to distinguish yourself from other applicants by posing thoughtful questions, indicating to the Hiring Manager your thorough investigation of the role and your keen interest in it.

Craft your inquiries with a personal touch, incorporating the name of the organization and framing your questions in a way that helps the Hiring Manager envision you in the role. Further enrich your questions by drawing on information shared during the interview, whether it's a specific procedure or project the hiring manager brought up.

From questions that zoom out to give you a broader perspective, to those that hone in on specifics related to the role, here are a few sample questions to consider for your next job interview:

  • What are your thoughts on [name of organization]'s growth trajectory over the next few years? This question can offer valuable insights into the organization's strategic plans and vision for the future, providing you with a sense of the company's stability and long-term prospects.
  • What are the key goals that [name of the organization] is currently prioritizing, and how does this team and role contribute to achieving these objectives? The answer to this question will provide crucial insights into the organization's concrete future plans and demonstrate how your potential job aligns with and supports these specific goals.
  • What is the performance review process like at this organization? This question can provide valuable information about how employees' work is assessed and the frequency of such evaluations.
  • What professional development opportunities are available at [name of the organization]? This question will give you a sense of how much the organization invests in the professional growth and advancement of its employees.
  • What factors do you believe contribute to employee retention at [name of the organization]? This inquiry provides insight into the organization's values, sense of community, and how employees find their place within the company.

  • With whom will I collaborate most closely in this role? This question will give you an understanding of the team dynamics, insights into their structure, and how they interact with other units or divisions within the organization.

For example, I might ask how the organization integrates the principles of agroecology into its daily activities, or how it plans to develop long-term sustainable agricultural projects. These questions allow me to assess not only the role's suitability for my skills, but also the organization's commitment to sustainability and innovation in agriculture.
