Do you have the 3 secret ingredients required to be a good leader?

Do you have the 3 secret ingredients required to be a good leader?

Hands up who is happy with his/her boss. Most of the time, how that person reached an upper position than ours remains a mystery. Can we replace him/her? Would we be good leaders? The American author Peter Bregman wrote a new recipe for being a great leader: its composition allows to turn it into a little questionnaire for ourselves to verify if we have what it takes to run for a leadership position. Just three simple questions, starting all with the letter C.

1)     Confidence. Do you trust yourself? This parameter doesn’t refer to ambition and presumption, but to a subtle talent much more difficult to have: to be able to take Care of ourselves. In fact, it is impossible to be confident when we constantly need to be approved by others. Our solidity comes from our ability to be kind and tolerant with ourselves, especially when there are no positive signals by others.

Would you be a confident leader because you know how to take Care of yourself when there is a need it?

2)     Connection. People feel your trust even when you disagree with them? This kind of trust is a form of constant openness to others, it refers to the ability to give others the possibility to be themselves, even when they do things differently from how we would do them. Above all, it refers to the Curiosity that keeps your ears and eyes open, preventing you from rushed conclusions about thoughts of the other person.

Would you be a leader who knows how to be Curious about others?

3)     Courage. Can you take risks? A good leader is a person who takes risks, on the basis of his/her trust and openness to others. Taking risks means going beyond your comfort zone, accepting to be vulnerable for an undefined amount of time. Courage is an emotional dimension. It refers to being open to discomfort to explore new paths.

Would you be a Courageous leader, not because physically strong but because open enough to be vulnerable?

If you answered yes to all these questions, you deserve to know that behind those words – Care, Curiosity and Courage – the root is the same: they all come from the word “cor”, which in Sanskrit means “heart”. Yes, Care, Curiosity and Courage are all talents of the heart. To be a good leader, all you need is Heart.

Totally agree, the new normal could be a leader that build his leadership on empathy and humanity. I also think that - at the same level of hearth - there is the abilty to execute vision. To do this, it's mandatory for each leader having strong arms as well as solid hands.
