Violence against women is a historical-cultural pandemic in the four corners of the world, practiced overwhelmingly by men, who still consider themselves our owners.
Data, unfortunately, does not let us lie: according to the Brazilian Public Security Forum, Brazil had 1,350 cases of femicide in 2020 — one case every six and a half hours. These crimes, motivated by gender issues, increased in 14 of the 27 federative units.
Three out of four victims were between 19 and 44 years old. The majority (61.8%) were black and, in general, the aggressor was a known person: 81.5% of the murderers were partners or ex-partners, while 8.3% of the women were killed by other relatives. In 55.1% of the cases, the deaths were caused by knives, scissors, pocketknives or similar instruments.
The number of calls to 190 (Military Police) rose 16.3%, totaling 694,131 calls for domestic violence, while 294,440 women had decisions on urgent protective measures granted by the Brazilian Justice last year.
In 2020, Brazil recorded a case of rape every eight minutes — 60,460 police reports. Most victims were female (86.9%) and were up to 13 years old (60.6%).
Of the total number of sexual crimes, 73.7% of the cases were against vulnerable victims – children under 14 years old or people unable to consent or offer resistance, while 85.2% of the criminals were known to the victim.
Sad childhood reality
In the Brazilian workplace, according to a survey by LinkedIn and Think Eva, 47% of our women have already suffered an episode of sexual harassment, and only 5% of us feel safe to report the harasser, for fear of retaliation. Our sexist culture still blames women who are victims of harassment. And this crime brings psychological damage that affects health, career and our lives, often irreversibly.
As if that were not enough, Brazil is the 4th country in the world in cases of child marriage. Most of these unions are established between individuals in adulthood and girls under the age of 18. According to a report produced by the World Bank, this reality affects more than 554,000 of our girls aged 10 to 17 years, with more than 65,000 of them getting married between 10 and 14 years of age. It is worth remembering that, under Brazilian law, any sexual relationship with a kid under the age of 14 is considered rape of a vulnerable person, with a penalty of 8 to 15 years in prison.
In addition to this, according to a global study carried out by Plan International, 77% of our girls have experienced sexual harassment on social media. Brazil is the country with the worst rate and this digital crime reaches our girls from the age of eight.

Individual attitude, collective (and business) action
Against data there are no arguments. Is it too much to ask you men to engage and mobilize for an end to the violence you practice against us and our girls?
It is past time for you to review your practices and attitudes, looking for alternatives to establish more egalitarian, fair and non-violent relationships.
We need to fight all forms of violence against us, whether domestic (psychological, physical, economic or patrimonial), sexual and reproductive, obstetric, corporate and institutionalized, among many others.
And this will only be achieved if we think about gender awareness and education for men and women, which allows us to rethink and understand how this system is established in society. A mobilization of men, side by side with us, in favor of a more fair society and a future without discrimination or gender violence.
If you are a company leader, remember that gender equality is the SDG 5, among the 17 Sustainable Development Goals of the Planet. And fighting violence against women and girls belongs to the "S" part of your ESG matrix. If you are a man, come with us. This cause is yours!

3 年For me now I've been married once before to my grad school crush, Her mom was abused so she abused her kids in return and they are out in the world untreated, We ended up getting a devorce after four kid and 15 years! Because the government say trade your husband for cash, Or lock him up it's not your mental health, And the thing for me is the word say! If your husband don't make all the money he is good for nothing! And the funny part about this is it comes from most females that have mental issues that go untreated, there is no such thing as reverse rolls in my house I cook, I clean, I grocery shop and work Part time to make time for two kids, my new 4year marriage, my now wife is a nurse she does things single people do. She struggles with her size blk 300 lb 5'5" she been struggling with her size all her life her siblings would pick on her her mom would beat her and she has been in lots of violent relationships, There are time we don't have sex for 30days at a time, It's hard being a man and being over looked because the wold say men don't cry and no one asks if we are ok! Or do we need! I feel sometimes as a man I don't matter until I make the most money or until I do something rong!

3 年i never knew how hard this issues is becoming to bring to leaders, Because they feel it's not an issue, or throw it under the rug, And in America double standards is a huge issue too.

3 年Devastating international statistics regarding violence against women which we must stand up against. Solidarity required and skills to support Bystanders to no longer be bystanders will influence and secure cultural and behavioural change.

3 年It was good to see that when prosecuted they are actually given real time. Here in the US the punishments ae not so steep and a lot of the abuse all children suffer the authorities are aware and do very little, if nothing to help the victims. I am so sick of seeing posts like this that try to get people to turn against each other. The issues we face today is not a black vs white issue, male against female, democrat against republican but a system against the people that pay taxes and keep them in jobs. Let be honest for a moment. Many of the child abuse and neglect cases and worst of all child deaths come from families that are or have been in the system. Why are there no laws to protect the innocent? Many of the foster families are tired of reporting the abuse they see only to be told they are putting these innocent kids right back into the home they removed them from once, twice, etc. These children are tomorrow's future and if we sit back and allow them to be abused we are putting the next generation in a very bad place. Shame on us and shame on the ones that try to present these #s without looking at the abuse that takes place while in the hands of the ones that could do something about it.

3 年I think it is our most important task as a parent to teach our children the meaning of human rights. Equal rights without discrimination of gender, race, religion, cultural heritage, political opinion or any physical qualities. Everyone should be treated humanely as you would want to be treated yourself. Without violence in any way. I have learned this in Mother's milk that I drank as a baby. Everyone should have these same rights. BUT this would mean peace worldwide. I hope peace happens before we destroy this planet with climate change. We would really need human rights and peace before we start struggling with water and clean & habitable temperature air.
