Do you feel secure at home?

In today’s world, the importance of a secure home cannot be understated. Our homes are not just physical structures but sanctuaries where every individual should feel safe and protected. However, the rising incidences of intrusion, child abuse by domestic workers, and the alarming rate at which children go missing from their homes and neighborhoods have clearly demonstrated that on the contrary, families are not very safe & brought to the fore the imminent dangers that lurk all around us. It is a growing concern for many families.

Monitoring Domestic workers

We love the convenience that our domestic workers bring to our lives. Our children are taken care of when we are at work, our manicured gardens are well tendered, laundry is done and, in most homes, meals are prepared. We cannot understate the value of these workers. However, sadly, there have been cases of security threats & thefts linked to the same workers that we entrust our homes and loved ones. This adds another layer of complexity to maintaining a secure & happy environment at home and calls for proactive monitoring of the workers' activities. By so doing, homeowners will gain peace of mind and the means to detect & address anomalies that compromise our security promptly.

The Delicate Balance of managing Teenagers.

As our children grow into teenagers, new challenges emerge. Striking the right balance between giving them personal space and protecting them from the influence of bad company, abuse, and drugs is crucial for their welfare. We have witnessed events like house parties and birthday parties that have raised concerns from well-meaning parents & care givers because of the excessive behavior displayed by some of our sons & daughters. A delicate balance between personal space & accountability is necessary to foster trust and independence while ensuring their safety and guiding them through their formative years.

Our Multi layered solution

To combat some of these challenges that have plagued society, we have taken a multi-layered security approach to Home Security. This is aimed at delaying, detecting & deterring crime.

Layer one

Have you considered that the area right outside your compound could be your weakest point? For some homes, these will be neighbor’s homes, empty plots, or a construction site. If you are a nature lover, it will probably be a river or a thicket. Depending on the level of security awareness & interventions that the immediate neighbors have, this could be the danger zone that you overlook every day. ??

In most homes, the owners invest in perimeter protection such as electric fences, razor wires, perimeter beams and heavy-duty designer gates to combat this threat. These solutions come in varied forms, quality, shapes & colors to suit the homeowner’s preference. We also cannot overlook the fact that the effectiveness of these systems is highly dependent on the workmanship of the installers.

Layer two

When designing security solutions for a home, the space often referred to as the "compound or garden," forms an important part for consideration. This is the area between the perimeter of a property and the house. It is particularly vulnerability to unauthorized entry due to multiple access points and its proximity to the house.

Home with Security light

Implementing effective security measures in this space can provide homeowners & security agents ample time to react to a threat or stall it all together, hence the need for professionally designed security systems. Another key consideration in design is lighting. Modern homes invest in garden & wall lights with just the right intensity as extremes become a loophole for intruders to exploit. The lights can be solar or grid powered & have intelligence to sense motion & energy conservation. A well-designed lighting system will combine both fixed & motion – sensor lights that allow the intruder’s movement to be monitored.

Outdoor CCTV cameras and outdoor motion sensors

In this space, CCTV surveillance is instrumental in deterring crime and providing footage for the events. An intrusion is scary enough. Lack of footage is nerve–racking as there is a possible lack of comprehensive, reliable evidence to reconstruct the scene of crime, especially when the attack is excessive or fatal.

Outdoor PIRs can be added to enhance security. These are part of an elaborate intrusion detection system in the house but are installed outdoors. They are triggered by proximity of intruders to the windows & doors. Modern architecture has embraced high, wall-sized glass windows & doors which create a level of vulnerability.

Guard dogs will also add another layer of protection here as they will serve as the first level of defense and alert homeowners of an imminent attack.

Routine maintenance of these security systems is critical to guaranteeing their full lifespan & up-time.

Layer three

Once bitten, twice shy. If you have been unfortunate to encounter a full-fledged robbery at home, carjacking, kidnapping, or any other threat to your life, you will spare no effort to secure yourself & your loved ones. Once intruders have gained access to your house, it is a matter of do or die, fight or flight. Their resolve is evident. They have managed to penetrate the above two layers if they exist.

An intrusion detection system will provide you with a means to notify your neighbors and response company of the attack, giving you hope in a desperate situation that there is a chance for rescue. Additionally, it will have fire detection sensors to alert in case of fire.

In a home setting, fire threats are ever present. Fires can start from electrical faults, unattended cooking, or flammable materials, while carbon monoxide poisoning can result from faulty heating systems, traditional charcoal cookers or inadequate ventilation.

Unfortunately, intruders are not much threatened by CCTV if current incidences are to be factored. However, they are a critical tool in a crime scene to provide evidence & useful information on the security lapse that can inform security systems design. Surveillance cameras provide real-time monitoring capabilities with advanced features like night vision.

Not to overlook Smart locks & other forms of access control to specific rooms as well as WIFI which is at the heart of connectivity. Nearly all the systems will have WIFI enabled communication protocols to provide means for data transmission. Smart locks enhance door security by allowing remote control and customizable access codes.

Each part of a residential property, from walls to roofs, plays a vital role in creating a secure environment. By addressing security concerns in these areas, tenants and homeowners can significantly reduce the risk of unauthorized access, theft, and damage, ensuring a safer living environment for themselves and their families.

Layer four

Shared facilities within an estate, such as swimming pools, clubhouses, community gardens and kids' playgrounds can be vulnerable to various security threats. These threats include unauthorized access, vandalism, material theft, child theft and even personal safety risks to residents, especially after dark or when these areas are less frequented.

Security in such communal environments is crucial not only to protect personal property but also to ensure the safety and well-being of all residents, including children and the elderly, who might use these shared spaces more frequently. The community spirit notwithstanding, these are the areas with most exposure to outsiders & guests, especially during parties, family gatherings & communal events.

To enhance security within residential estates, a multifaceted approach should be employed, incorporating electronic access control systems like key cards to limit entry to authorized individuals, and the installation of CCTV cameras in strategic areas for deterrence. Adequate lighting is essential for visibility and safety, deterring criminal activities in communal spaces. The adoption of smart locks for communal facilities offers advanced control and monitoring options.

Regular maintenance and security audits ensure the ongoing effectiveness of all security measures.
