Developers start their career by writing code.

We spend many years mastering our craft and learn to be skilful at writing good code.

But once we get into a leadership role, whether that’s a Senior Engineer, Tech Lead, EM, etc…. our job becomes much more than just writing code.

I went through the same transition in my career so I know what a big adjustment this can be.

I’ve talked to a lot of stressed out new leaders and managers that feel like they’re the bottleneck for productivity.

They wonder if the team is moving fast enough, and feel like they never have enough hours in the day to get everything done.

And it’s usually due to the fact that they’re falling back into their old role because they feel the heavy pressure of a looming deadline.

But as Tech Leaders, it’s important to re-define your definition of work.

Your job isn’t to just write code anymore.

Your job is to mentor and unblock your team so you can be doing higher level work.

To make the most impact with each unit of your work, you have to leverage all your years of experience by clearly guiding the people on your team.

As a Leader you can get far more done by spending your wisdom than you can by jumping in and working crazy hours to ship stuff faster.

You need to slow down to speed things up.

By mentoring more junior engineers, you’ll noticed an increase in productivity and will hit more deadlines.

And the best part?

All of the pressure will be off your shoulders and your team will thrive on the advice you give them.

Want to hear more how you can redefine your definition of work and get the most out of your team?
