Do you feel like you are growing?
"You have been a lawyer, a homeowner, and a polyglot, Diogo!" That's an example of the comfort sentence I used to dose myself whenever envy struck.
It was a defense mechanism triggered whenever I met someone I perceived to be more successful than I was.
A formula my brain somehow created to cope with my need to achieve:
- "Yes, they are ahead, but I am [X], or I have [X]."
A trap many of us fall into, but one that luckily no longer holds me captive.
But, telling you how I escaped that trap, the techniques I developed, or the books I've read to get there will do nothing for you. Trying to emulate what I did is useless.
Why?
Well, it turns out that your reality and your current state of mind are different from mine. That delta in our understanding of reality dictates the ability to internalize and apply external advice.
So, it is pointless for me to sit and preach a specific technique to the masses.
Instead, I am proposing a new approach, a collective one.
But, before I tell you about that, let's frame the problem, and I'll let you in on how I escaped my envy trap:
The Problem:
The problem I am solving touches on the slow developmental growth that people often perceive they are going through. This is despite their efforts to devour content, attend courses, and life-hack their way to the top. And despite incremental gains, people do what I used to do and begin to compare:
- I see a successful person [X]. How do I become a successful person [X]?
That's a trap because:
- There will never be another person [X]
- Replicating their education and path won't produce the same results for you.
- Your learning journey becomes stagnant and non-creative… you are replicating, not living.
My Release:
I got myself out of the comparison/envy trap because of an interaction with another individual. It was not a book, an exercise, or a course. It was repetitive weekly sessions with this person.
What was it that made it so impactful about these interactions?
It was individualized. The time with this friend/mentor catered to me and where I was in my life then. It wasn't some "how to get rich" YouTube video targeted to the masses; it was repeated sessions that followed me… as an individual.
How can you escape the trap, too?
I am starting a new venture that I will be testing. To start, I will be:
- Selecting five business owners and professionals in Brazil.
- Holdin 1-hour weekly group sessions.
- Each week, one person will be in the hot seat. That person will be the center of attention, and the entire group will focus on that person and meet them where they are professionally and emotionally.
- The collective group will advise on problems, issues, and desires based on shared knowledge. Each hot-set member will be held to an action plan.
- It rotates so each member can be in the hot seat monthly.
The first session is on October 28th, and I will let you all know how it goes. (or better yet, I will let the members tell you how it went)
What's the end goal?
Real and scalable growth.
I am burned out on vanity growth and how it's held me back. I no longer want to be measured by how many books I can read in a year or how many throw-away certifications I can receive. I want to grow in the right way, and I want to help others achieve that same enlightenment.
If you have thought about this or want to learn more about my approach, DM me.
