Do you feel invisible despite your hard work?
Dr Katherine I.
Keynote Speaker & Shoe-Lover | Pushing ambitious people to lead with self-respect, not fear (because trying to please everyone slows your path to success).
Do you feel like you put in more effort than half the people who are getting ahead, and yet—you feel invisible in comparison to the amount of effort you put in?
You watch the opportunities go to someone else.
The recognition? Nowhere to be found.
And you’re left wondering: Is this even worth it?
It’s frustrating as hell.
And I get it.
The oh-so brilliant mathematician in you looks at the numbers that represent your progress - the likes, the sales, the promotions, and that voice says, this ain’t working.
But then your heart reminds you of the human data - the people who pull you aside to say “I don’t know where I’d be without you.”
So the real question is: Which data set matters more?
When you’re not getting the recognition you feel you deserve, you start questioning yourself.
It’s the kind of thinking that makes you seriously ponder: maybe it’s time to quit?
But if hard work was all it took, you’d be winning by now.
The truth is: Hard work alone doesn’t guarantee success.
So what can you do?
People will tell you to "you just need to be more confident." And don’t get me wrong, confidence is a critical component to success—it’s about your willingness to give something a go, even when you’re unsure.
Confidence is turning thoughts into action - like sending an email to ask for a meeting about your future, or introducing yourself to that ‘super duper important person that is out of your league’.
But confidence alone isn’t the answer. We also need to build our self-respect.
Because self-respect is that little voice inside of your head that tells you: ‘you have something special about you worth fighting for’.
Self-respect reminds you that
You can be the most skilled, dedicated person in the room, but if you’re not willing to back yourself and bet on yourself, no amount of hard work will move the needle.
So get yourself back out there.
Because even if you think nobody is watching—someone is.
And they need you to keep going.
Until next time,
Back yourself,
Bet on yourself and
Be Respected.
