Are you a coach who's ever felt exhausted, mentally drained, or even questioning your passion for coaching after a long day of client sessions? Do you wonder if there's a better way to handle these challenges and emerge stronger from them? Through this article I want to share something that all coaches, including myself, have experienced at some point – feeling drained and mentally affected after coaching sessions.?
If you've been there, you know how it can be a real challenge but there's a way to change this narrative and emerge as a more active and resourceful coach.
In my journey as a coach, I've had my fair share of ups and downs, just like anyone else in this profession. Maybe you can relate to this – while facilitating a transformative process with a client, you sometimes find yourself feeling drained, your energy plummeting, and negative thoughts creeping in. It's easy to feel stuck in these moments.
So, why does this happen? Well, as a coach, if you often end your day feeling drained and uninspired, it's likely because you're operating from a perspective view rather than a descriptive one. What does that mean? When a client opens up and shares their life and story with you, you start perceiving it through your own lens, your own map of the world.
In the world of NLP, we refer to these individual maps as "perceptions" or "MAPS." It's important to remember that everyone operates from their own unique maps. When a client shares from their map, a common pitfall is that coaches often overlay their own perceptions onto the client's narrative.
For example, if a client says, "My wife/husband is like you know how a wife/husband is," a knee-jerk response might be, "Yeah, I know how all husbands/wives are." This kind of response takes you down the rabbit hole of your own perceptions, making it difficult to gather the data needed to challenge the client's perceptions for coaching purposes.
These assumptions, perceptions, and imposing our maps on someone else's maps can lead us into our own stuck states. Instead of focusing on the client's problem, we end up trying to solve our own, leaving us feeling drained and mentally exhausted because our brains can only handle one thing at a time, and we're bouncing between perspectives.
So, how can you avoid this and stay energized? It all boils down to focusing on the process rather than the content. Keeping yourself updated on this aspect can make the coaching process smoother and less draining.
