The first newsletter of many. I've been doing a ridiculous amount of research and real life applications when it comes to growth, learning and professional development. This newsletter, called "The 10% Learning Habit", will be chock full of actionable ideas that you can implement immediately for yourself and the people around you. I'm extremely grateful for you subscribing!
Today's topic: Anxiety and Boredom.
I experience both Anxiety and Boredom on a daily basis. I'm sure many of you do as well. I came across a simple yet profound solution.
#1. If your skill set is low in a particular area, and the challenge is high... that will result in you feeling anxiety.
#2. If your skill set is high in a particular area, and the challenge is low... that will result in you feeling boredom.
Once we accept these two statements as truth, its almost as if the answers appear immediately.
If I'm constantly feeling anxious about something, I need to increase my skill set. AKA. Self Development. AKA. Learning. AKA. Stop doing things the way that I've been doing it. Once I increase my skillset to match the challenge, I am can reach peak performance levels emotionally, personally, and professionally.
If I'm constantly feeling bored about something, Its time for a greater challenge. Maybe I need to level up my responsibilities. Maybe I need to serve a greater amount of people. Maybe I need to take a leadership role. Once I increase the challenge to match my skill set, I can again reach peak performance levels emotionally, personally, and professionally.

ACTION TIME.
#1. Pick an area of your life where you feel a great amount of anxiety. Be honest with yourself, and rate your skill set on a scale of 1 to 10. 1 being a low skill set in this area, 10 being an absolute rock star in this area. Now immediately (today), list out at least 3 resources that could help you increase your skill set in this area. Pick one resource and start learning TODAY.
Example: For me right now, I have anxiety when dealing with the emotions of my pre-teen son. If I'm honest with myself, I'm probably a 3 when it comes to dealing with these emotions. I could read books on the topic, talk to counselors, or find the top experts in the space and start modeling what they do. I just went to amazon and ordered a book on the topic.
#2. Do the same process for an area where you are Bored.
Example: I'm bored when it comes to Social Media. I'm tired of just being a follower, its too easy. My skill level is high, but the challenge of just being a follower is probably a 2 out of 10. Time to up my game. That's one of the reasons I decided to start this newsletter today. It's time to up my challenge when it comes to Social Media, and start by writing a weekly newsletter... (and probably up it again soon with videos and podcasts.)
Awesome. Enough talking for me. Read this article a few times until the lesson sinks in, and please take action immediately. Feel free to message me directly or comment with any feedbacks or thoughts!

1 年Good analysis! Matching skills and development level with tasks is so important. Ken Blanchard's Situational Leadership philosophy takes this to the next level for leaders, but you've done a great job laying out steps someone can take personally. When both an individual and a leader are on the same page and working together, that's when meteoric things happen. Shout out to Melissa Schumann who was awesome at this in a previous role of mine.
