Do you ever have a week like this?

Do you ever have a week like this?

Do you ever feel overwhelmed, even during moments of relaxation?

There's a lot going on right now in my life, and more than ever I feel the need to practice my self care. After a bad car accident in our family, where miraculously everyone is physically ok, I find myself a bit agitated and flighty. While I'm actively practicing some ways to help me feel better, I thought I'd share them with you too.

It's common to feel disconnected from the present when anxiety creeps in, causing us to dwell on past stressors or future worries. Grounding exercises are a powerful tool and my go to, to bring me back to the present moment, aiding in the management of stress and anxiety.

We can all benefit from grounding techniques, even when we "feel we are ok". I tell myself I feel ok, even though I know this event has deeply disturbed me.

Grounding exercises encompass both mental and physical activities crafted to alleviate stress and anxiety. Many healthcare professionals advocate for grounding exercises, especially for individuals dealing with high levels of stress or those who have undergone traumatic experiences. I myself, have found them to be life-saving!

Today, as the gentle rain pitter patters on the window panes, I've been focusing on two simple practices that can bring a sense of calm and help rejuvenate my spirit. Try them yourself and tell me what you think.

On a couple of occasions I splashed some cold water on my face and hands: A sudden change in temperature, like splashing cold water on your face or hands, can jolt your body into awareness and reset your nervous system. This quick sensation shift helps you reconnect with your body and the present moment, redirecting your focus and emotions.

I also have a scented candle going and I'm using my favorite essential oil - lavender. Engaging your sense of smell with pleasant scents can promote relaxation. Lavender, in particular, is known for its therapeutic effects on stress and anxiety. Surrounding yourself with comforting scents can create a calming atmosphere.

I got cozy on the couch and wrapped myself in a soft blanket: The tactile sensation of a soft blanket can be incredibly soothing. Embracing the comfort of a cozy blanket can help you find a moment of peace and relaxation.

And wouldn't you know it that our sweet pit bull jumped up on the couch with me and curled herself by my side. Nothing more precious and soothing in that moment. Redirecting your thoughts by focusing on someone dear to you, like a beloved pet can take your mind away from jarring feelings. Feeling love can trigger the release of happy chemicals in your brain, such as dopamine, lifting your mood and reducing anxiety.

I close my eyes and I envision a calm place. The ocean side is often my go to, with gentle waves lapping on the beach. I can hear the sounds when I close my eyes, and feel the warmth of the sun on my skin. This is one of my favorite things to do in life, as it helps me get in that special mood, and both body and mind find a new joyful space to hang out in. Visualize a serene location that brings you peace and tranquility. Imagining yourself in a peaceful setting can help alleviate anxiety in the moment, providing a mental escape from stressors.

Another favorite thing to help my mind relax is to engage in memory games. Challenge your mind with activities like memory games, where you match cards on a table (my favorite), or play Mahjong. These cognitive and tactile tasks divert your attention from anxious thoughts, encouraging focus on a more productive and engaging activity.

Incorporating these grounding practices into your routine can help you navigate moments of stress and anxiety with greater ease.

Prioritizing your mental well-being is a valuable investment in your overall health and happiness. Taking care of your mental well-being is a crucial step towards a more balanced and peaceful life. ??
