Do you ever feel like no matter how hard you try, it’s never quite enough?

Do you ever feel like no matter how hard you try, it’s never quite enough?

This is the hidden weight of perfectionism.

Many of us erroneously assume that perfectionism is associated with ‘being perfect,’ but it is not just about aiming for excellence.?

Perfectionism is about the relentless pressure to meet impossibly high standards, even when it takes a toll on your well-being. You might notice it showing up in certain areas of your life, like work or school, while being less of a factor elsewhere. The problem is, that perfectionism comes with significant downsides:

?1) Stress, burnout and general unhappiness: The excessive drive for achievement can be exhausting and can take a toll on your physical and emotional well-being.

2) Low self-esteem: It can be hard to feel good about yourself and struggle to meet all the “should statements,” many of which may be impossible to satisfy.

3) Strained relationships: Holding those around you to the same high standards can create tension and distance your connections.

?There’s a bit of a paradox when it comes to perfectionism, as many of us believe it is a good thing to strive for excellence. And while it is true that holding high standards could enable us to set goals for ourselves and be quite motivating. It is important to begin to question these standards when the costs associated with them outweigh the gains.

?The good news, it is possible to break free from perfectionism.

At Crosstown Psychology, we’re here to meet you where you are most comfortable and help you navigate these struggles, challenge unrealistic standards, and create a healthier relationship with success. Let’s work together to help you thrive.?
