In every career field, trends emerge that shape the landscape. These trends can be seen in areas such as education, hiring practices, technology, and particularly in the area of skills.
?
But are you keeping an eye on this last one? Do you monitor the trends in skill sets? If everyone is acquiring new skills and you’re not, it could put you at a disadvantage the next time you're job hunting or maybe you are currently in the job market, this may be a pitfall during the application process.
?
When you notice a trend in upskilling within your industry, jump on the bandwagon as soon as possible. Being an early adopter of new skills is especially beneficial when you're not actively seeking a job. This way, you can gain practical experience with your current employer, which is far more valuable than just having institutional knowledge. Practical experience always carries more weight when applying for a new position or aiming for that promotion.
?
I strongly recommend seeking out opportunities to upskill whenever possible. It demonstrates to any employer that you are adaptable and capable of handling change—qualities that are highly valued in a great employee or job applicant.
?
In conclusion, while you are upskilling, don't forget to update your resume and LinkedIn profile with your new abilities. Only you can tell your story, so make sure to document all your achievements. If you don’t, no one will ever know just how amazing you are.
