Irrespective of whether it is present or not, trust is a force that is experienced in any interaction between people. It is the foundation of all relationships. It takes time to earn and can be destroyed in an instance!
What is Trust?
Trust is a comforting feeling or belief that someone can be relied upon to do what is expected of them. It's a leap of faith that someone takes when they place their trust in you!
Trustworthy Characteristics
When it comes to earning trust, it's important to recognise that everyone places different priorities on different characteristics, and these priorities will change depending on the situation.
Thinking that that the vast majority would say credibility and reliability, we asked 100 engineers what priorities they placed on the above characteristics. To our surprise, 30-50% stated that authenticity, vulnerability and empathy were a priority to them.

In Conclusion
If you want to be perceived as someone that people can trust, you can't rely on one or two characteristics to get you by. You need to demonstrate CRAVE.

1 年Love this Jim. And so easy to remember as everyone (I hope) wants to experience CRAVE as being fully trusted this way and offer the same to others. I usually have in my own grid "integrity" which is about values, principles, ethics and find it particularly important when I am about to share something very personal or confidential. I ask myself "can I fully trust her/him to keep what I am about to share safe (as if its the most precious thing)?" Which has nothing to do with the rest (reliability, competence, etc), you can have one but not the other(s). Fascinating topic!

1 年I love this model Jim, and I feel the power of CRAVE when we share with our learner’s together. Fascinating to observe how people suddenly reflect on the importance a d at same time realize how situational it is. It takes a lot of hard work to earn the trust and it can be gone in a second. TRUST is something we need to be intentional and thoughtful about, and earning it by breathing our beliefs and values as a person.
Speak Truth to Power
1 年My current position was built on trust. There were some I trusted. They were usually supportive. Others were not trustworthy and yelled a lot. Good triumphed over evil when I was surrounded by half trustworthy and half non trustworthy employees. It is the gateway to a better relationship and better work performance.
