As an African American Leadership Coach, I am in a unique position to have conversations with my African American clients that speak to the heart of their identity, culture, and ability to be authentic in the workplace as leaders. In my professional career, code-switching for me was required if I wanted to survive. I had no choice and neither do many of my clients.
Code-switching is a common linguistic phenomenon in the African American community, where individuals may switch between different linguistic varieties or styles depending on the social and cultural context. In this community, code-switching often involves the alternation between African American Vernacular English (AAVE) and Standard American English (SAE). Both of these linguistic varieties have distinct grammatical structures, vocabulary, and pronunciation.
