Do you change for the better?

Do you change for the better?

Let me state the obvious- Change is a constant in any organisation. It is viewed as an instrument to tackle problems at many levels. And many organisations do make changes with that intent- to address problems. Yet, leaders across many organisations lose sleep over changes not being effective. Over changes not helping them as they anticipated.

All it is, is uncertainty about one question- are we changing for the better? In other words, are we actually making progress with change? The reality is- while change is constant, progress is not. So where do organisations go wrong? Why is it that when they make a change, they do not guarantee progress?

To answer this question, let’s begin with a premise- all changes are made with an intent to solve a problem. Here is a cycle of events that we go through when tackling problems. When we face a problem, we find a solution, and we incorporate that solution by making a change. Now we hit a key point. This is the point where you can actually determine if the change is progressive.

Here it goes- When we make a change, that leads to more problems, which we address as we go along. We know we are making progress in our ventures when the problems that come up after making the change are of higher quality. If we tend to attract problems of the same quality, it could mean that we aren’t really making progress.

When you make a change in your ventures, what sort of problems do you attract consequently? Are they of higher quality or the same as what they were?
