Do You Believe You Are Lucky?

Do You Believe You Are Lucky?

Ecocentric Bias: Something that causes people to rely on the point of view they have while examining the events that occurred in their lives or when people try to look at things from others’ points of view. Or in simple terms, most people think they do most of the work.

When researchers of a multi-author paper were asked about their share of work, the total comes out to be more than a hundred percent. On average it comes out to be one-hundred and forty percent. Does that mean they underestimate the number of fights they start? No, people also tend to think they create most of the problems.

You Remember What You Do But Not What Others Did

The bias of thinking that we do most of the work is underestimating the influence other people and things are making in our lives. And this includes the role of luck in success. Maybe the hard work, a great coach, and determination are what a hockey player thinks got them to the National Hockey League. But have you ever thought that this can be because they were lucky to be born in the month of January? Hockey players being selected into top-tier leagues born in the first quarter of the year comprises 40 percent of the total.

Do you think that the difference of being born in the month of January must reduce with each passing year? Rather a juxtaposing force works compounding the difference and making the Hockey Players born in January more likely to be selected.

Does That Mean Our Hard Work Count For Nothing?

If you are working hard maybe this article will offend you by stating that the luck will get to the point you wish to arrive. We need to realize it is not just luck or hard work but a combination of both that can take us to greater heights.

Unless the opportunity knocks at our door, how will we enter the gates of success? Most of the time we do not appreciate our luck, majorly because we did not do it, it happens on its own. What if we made the possibilities we have to carry no significance at all? Will we ever be able to do something new? Most probably not.

So What Are You Thankful For?

Making gratitude practice can help us in appreciating more in life than we are and attract better things for us. Every day we have hundreds of things to be grateful for including, your job, your family, healthy food, healthy life, sleep you had last night, technology, teachers, music, and holidays.

Developing The Bias Awareness

Reducing the egocentric bias can help us view things from many more perspectives that we ignored earlier. This includes learning about it more, its effects on the people, why it occurs, and how it is influencing how you are thinking.

One study found out that if we made a decision while looking at ourselves in the mirror, it has the ability to increase our self-awareness. Becoming self-aware of being conscious of ourselves can help us appreciate other forces that worked for our success.

Who do you think is working towards helping you do what you are doing today? Maybe there was a small advertisement that inspired you to become an actor. But if you want to be successful, you must think that your hard work will get you there. Have a belief that your destiny will lead you to the path of success. This may sound paradoxical but when you do achieve success, realize that luck played an equally important role.
