Do the write thing

LinkedIn Top Voice | INC 500 Winner | Founders: Spending too much time in sales and not growing as quickly as you want? I can fix that without breaking the bank. Book an introductory call. I have been where you are now.
For the longest time, when I would go to work in the morning I would check my email first thing. I’d be meandering through the messages when something would catch my eye.
I’d click on it. That would lead me somewhere.
I’d usually find what I clicked interesting and see another interesting/shiny object that would lead me somewhere else.
Pretty soon, I was being led all over the place, and not sure how I got there.
I’d look up and 45 minutes had passed with nothing really productive to show for my efforts.
Has that ever happened to you?
If so, help is on the way.
Start journaling.
A daily journal has not only been proven to be a great organizer for the day but, and maybe more importantly, stopping the morning monkey brain from leading you around.
Author Julia Cameron says, “Once we get those muddy, maddening, confusing thoughts nebulous worries, jitters, and preoccupations on the page, we face our day with clearer eyes.”
By starting your day journaling, your mind is free to focus on the important matters which bring you the most value in your day.
I have four, sometimes five, sections to my Daily Journal - I’ll put a picture of it below:
1. FTF - In the spirit of Stephen Covey, I list First Things First. These are things I know I need to accomplish that day.
2. Gratitude - Here I list three-to-Five things I’m grateful for. Could be anything; health, finances, family, thin crust pizza. It’s the act of being grateful that does the trick.
3. Resilience - I write down my resilience mantra for the day. Today’s was: I’ve overcome every obstacle I’ve faced. This day will be no different.
4. Success - Every day has a success somewhere in it if you look hard enough. Big deals, small deals, getting to the next phase of the deal, losing 5 pounds. Celebrate every success, big and small.
5. Ideas (Bonus, not in the video) - I like to write down ideas for new projects, ways to do things better, and just brainstorm. Helps keep things organized in my head.
Your journal only needs to be a one-sided sheet of paper. Completing mine takes me less than eight minutes. Eight minutes to have a better day versus 45 minutes of getting lost in the ether. Pretty good trade-off, I think.
So, here’s your Action Item and Mission, should you decide to accept it: Simple. Start journaling. Follow my format if you like or research journaling. There are a ton of great resources and ideas out there. Check as many out as you can.
Since I’ve started journaling my days get off on a steady course. No one is leading me anywhere. And the monkeys stay asleep.
