Do we remember?

Do we remember?

How good would it be if we train our teams and all of them begin to remember everything they have learnt? Well, then you must know about Ebbinghaus theory of forgetting curve! The curve indicates that with no efforts made to retain information, we will forget it over the period of time. That’s because memory retention is dependent upon relative strength of memory and time!

We all have attended many brilliant training workshops and felt inspired to remember and do as we have learnt but for many of us, it just fades away….

Wait!! The ray of hope is we all know that the memory strength can be improved! Ebbinghaus and many others talked about the below learning techniques:

  • Use of mnemonics e.g. VIBGYOR to remember the rainbow colors or use of knuckles to remember the number of days in a month etc.
  • Spaced repetition – here’s a video that I came across with a very simple explanation

As it’s said “what you do after the training is equally important as what you do during the training” for a better ROI. This not just applies to the organisation but also to the individual in terms of “how” one can reinforce learning to keep resetting the “Forgetting” curve?

Just think of how easy is it for us to recite “A,B,C,D…” today and how difficult it could seem for the kinder-garden kids?

We are different from each other but we are humans! Some may take more efforts than others but the experience of learning can be made long-term.

I encourage you all to read more about these concepts –thanks to Google and Amazon of the world.. there’s so much knowledge readily available to implement!

Good Food for thought Geetanjali!! Very true - memory retention is dependent upon relative strength of memory and time! Time to revisit the mnemonics and refresh reading more to stay updated.

Interesting article, Geetanjali. I would like to add a quote by Benjamin Franklin here, "Tell me and I forget, teach me and I may remember, involve me and I learn."
