The buzz words Industrial Internet of Things (IIOT), Digital, Smart Manufacturing, Smart Cities, Smart Buildings...etc claim to bring in more decision making ability and comfort to the humans. Smart Connected Assets is a fundamental block for all these major initiatives.
Is our human race depending too much on technology? Humans climbed Mount Everest, went to Moon, built under ground tunnels, designed many reliable and complex machines and maintained them efficiently.
Today has the ability of Humans deteriorated to a level that "Smart Connected Assets" is becoming mandatory ?
Do we really need "Smart Connected Assets" ?
Thank you for the views , likes and comments.
Yes we need Smart Connected Assets specially when they are spread cross country in a linear or spacial form and not easily accessible or when they are in remote places and when they are very critical and monitoring their condition saves unplanned downtime.
Do you now : The aggregated value and economic benefit of the Internet of Things (IoT) will exceed $1.9 trillion in the year 2020 alone - Gartner
Out of the above the Real-Time Asset Health Monitoring will have a share of around $0.6 trillion.
Real-Time Asset Health Monitoring will minimize downtime and avoid potential equipment failures by enabling detailed monitoring of critical equipment condition (CBM).
So we need to re-look at our strategies on maintenance to adopt CBM with Smart Connected Assets.

8 年I for one like the idea of Smart Connected Assets. Surely, at some point, we'll go the way of Condition Monitoring with the Assets themselves telling us when the ideal time has arrived to maintain the asset. Much better than simply performing Preventive Maintenance on a time-based schedule such as every year. When will this happen? Industry seems quits slow at adopting such technologies for Maintenance. 30 years? 50 years from now for robust adoption?

8 年Dear Sir, Smart and connected assets need to looked from finance angle or business efficiency like your earlier articles on assets . As business evolve, the need for a tool which brings in higher efficiency Vis a vis others players in the game leads to the need for smart & connected assets .Examples for Smart & connected assets adding value are many eg cars ( increase safety ) , gensets ( save fuel pilferage in real time) , cold chainassets ( prevent deteriotion of milk products in real time ), PLC's ( reduce downtime & align the prodn plan ) , buildings ( reduced energy consumption )....... Overall smart & connected assets are the next frontier in my view.
