Do we really need to balance?
The challenge to do a perfect balancing act

Do we really need to balance?

How to find work-life balance? I believe there is no such thing as work and life – it is all life. When we are constantly striving to create what you care for, we will never wish for a break.

When we are constantly striving to create what we care for, we will never wish for a break. Our work has to be lived, and our life has to be worked at and there is no such thing as work and life, it is life and life. If our work is not life, then why do it? Work also is life. Would life happen if there was no work? I am not referring to just the economic aspects. So work is very much life. Let’s not make this demarcation that there is something called as work and life. There are different aspects of life, and they need to be dealt with.

One important thing people can do is, have family conversations regarding various things we are doing at our work. This builds a completely different level of trust and we do not know what insights may come from our family. These are people who are outside observers to our work, but they are people we trust, and who love us and want us to succeed. Their input can be extremely valuable. It may be our partner, it may be our five-year-old child, we do not know. I know people try to keep work conversations away from family, but I would say that is a mistake. Why can’t work conversations be very interesting if we are creating something? Family could get involved in it, and when we are at home, though we may not actually be working hands on, we could still be thinking and evolving ideas for tomorrow or for the future.

TGIF! I see that the “Thank God it’s Friday” culture. That means we are dead five days a week and only live on weekends. I feel it is not a good way to live. We must LIVE all the seven days.

The distinction between work and what is considered fun or pleasure is too stark in society today. If we constantly strive to create whatever we care for, whether we are in a work space or on the street, we will always feel like you are on a holiday.

This is mainly because people are suffering their work. One who knows the joy of activity will not want a break. For me, my work is a love affair. If I work 20 hours a day, I do not feel that something has been taken away from me. If we constantly strive to create whatever we care for, whether we are in a work space or at home or in the market, we will always feel like we are on a holiday. The physical body needs a break sometimes, but if we need a break from work, that means we are doing something we do not really care for. If we are doing something we truly care for, why would we want a break?

People are trying to divide their life so that work is something we do just for money and family is something we do to touch people’s lives. But no matter how much money we earn, if you find our partner or children are not touched by what we do, suddenly everything seems meaningless. Somewhere in our life, we want people to be touched by the activity we perform. For example, if one was to make a film, would one want to do it if no one wanted to watch it? Or build a house that no one would ever want to live in? We would not want to produce something no one wants to use. In some way, we long to touch people’s lives. This aspect need not restrict itself to family alone. It can extend itself into every area of life.

Work is not just about the money that we receive, it is about the privilege that we have been allowed to create something. Money is a means for our survival, and to that extent it is necessary. However, we must always assess ourselves in terms of whatever we are being asked to do. What is the level of responsibility that is being offered to me? What is the opportunity for me to create something truly worthwhile, both for myself and for everyone around me? Any work that I do in the world is truly worthwhile for me only if I am able to touch people’s lives deeply

So it is work life choice instead of balance.

If work is enjoyable and an expression of creativity, then the lines that divide work and play are blurred. Today's digital environment enables this.
