Do We Need A Mother Cat? Exploring AI Governance.

Hi Friends,

As I was scrolling through Instagram this week pondering how quickly the world is changing due to technology, this video popped out at me:

Meet Mother Cat, cheaper than your average babysitter!

The moment I saw this clip, I recognized the similarities between the child and humanity as a whole, and the need for a “mother cat” to serve as a governing body as artificial intelligence develops.

The responses in my?post on Linkedin?reflected numerous ideas around what that could look like:

  • Leveraging blockchain technology to prove the source of things whether it’s news, content, and more.
  • Creating a new system of checks and balances related to keeping AI regulated
  • Developing different political policies around AI development

Check out the latest breaking news around the potential of a moratorium to delay the development of AI tools until there are greater systems in place to manage it!

Here are Chat GPT4’s thoughts on how to manage it:

  1. Develop AI Ethics Guidelines and Standards: Establish a clear set of ethical guidelines and industry-wide standards will help shape the development of AI in a responsible and transparent manner. These guidelines should emphasize fairness, accountability, transparency, and the protection of user privacy.
  2. Promote Interdisciplinary Collaboration: Encourage collaboration between AI researchers, ethicists, policymakers, social scientists, and other stakeholders can provide diverse perspectives on the potential risks and benefits of AI technology. This collaboration will enable a more holistic understanding of the implications of AI and help design appropriate safeguards.
  3. Implement AI Governance and Regulation: Governments and regulatory bodies should play an active role in ensuring that AI development adheres to legal and ethical frameworks. This may involve creating new laws and regulations that specifically address AI's potential risks, such as job displacement, privacy violations, or biased decision-making.
  4. Invest in AI Safety Research: The AI research community should prioritize safety and long-term impact research alongside performance and capability advancements. This can help address potential risks proactively and ensure that AI systems are developed with safety and robustness in mind.
  5. Foster Public Engagement and Transparency: Public involvement in AI development is crucial for understanding societal concerns and building trust in AI systems. AI developers and companies should actively engage with the public and maintain transparency in their research, development, and deployment processes.
  6. Encourage International Cooperation: Global collaboration between nations, research institutions, and organizations can facilitate the exchange of knowledge and best practices in AI safety and ethics. This can help create a more unified approach to addressing AI's potential risks and mitigating its negative consequences.
  7. Education and Workforce Adaptation: As AI continues to advance, it is crucial to invest in education and workforce development programs that equip individuals with the skills needed to thrive in an AI-driven world. This can help mitigate potential job displacement and ensure that society is prepared for the changing nature of work.

The future is definitely unknown but one thing for sure is that we will either be proactive around setting up the right systems to manage the expansion of AI or we will learn the hard way.?
