It’s the first weekend in September, which means for those living in the USA, we get an extra day off from our 9 to 5.?
So while you crack open a cold one at the Sunday barbecue and feel the excitement of knowing that you don’t have to work tomorrow, you can reflect back on why Labor Day is a national holiday.?
Why Was Labor Day Created?
Labor Day was created as a holiday to honor and celebrate the American labor movement and the contributions of workers to the development and achievements of the United States. It also serves as a day to promote and recognize the social and economic achievements of workers and their importance to the well-being and prosperity of the nation.
How Did It Get Started?
The origins of Labor Day can be traced back to the late 19th century, a period marked by significant labor unrest and worker protests.?
One of the key events leading to the establishment of Labor Day was the Haymarket Affair on May 4, 1886.?
A peaceful labor rally in support of workers striking for an eight-hour workday turned violent when a bomb exploded, leading to the deaths of several police officers and civilians.?
This incident prompted a crackdown on labor activists and the labor movement.
In response to growing labor tensions and to acknowledge the importance of the labor movement, the Central Labor Union in New York City organized the first Labor Day parade on September 5, 1882.?
This event was held to advocate for labor rights, better working conditions, and fair wages.?
It became an annual tradition in New York and eventually spread to other cities and states until it was officially recognized as a federal holiday in the United States in 1894.?

Well over 100 years later, Labor Day remains an important occasion to reflect on workers' rights and achievements.?
Is Labor Day Still Relevant?
With the evolution of working from home, pay transparency, great resignations, and an always-on-work mentality, the modern workforce is becoming more demanding.?
Many people are fed up with the corporate bureaucracy and are on a quest to ditch their day job to live life on their own terms.?
In essence, these people don’t want to just have one holiday that celebrates “their achievementsâ€, but have every day be Labor Day.?
How Can I Make Labor Day 365?
The truth is, you can do it, but you need to be pragmatic in your approach.?
Here is my personal suggestion:
- Find out what you are passionate about
- Then figure out how to make money off of it?
- Create a budget so you can manage your cash burn
- Plan your exit from your current job
- Go all in and commit
- Reinvest the earnings from your gig either into your own company or into investments that can create additional revenue streams. (This is why I like real estate)
- Keep doing this until you are satisfied
Good luck creating your own path to financial independence, let me know how I can help.?
