"Do. Or do not. There is no try." -Yoda
A common refrain in my workplace is that we're too thinly staffed to have anyone here that isn't a DOER. Meaning, we can't have anyone here that just tells others what to do, we need people that will actually do it themselves. The people that made it through the pandemic restructuring are people who are doing multiple jobs, constantly multi-tasking, and willing to do literally anything to keep us going. Broaden the scope, and the effects of 2020 are still being realized in larger companies all across the world. Huge companies, ones you wouldn't expect, are downsizing. This will radically change the face of what recruitment looks like in the future.
The most important skill set I'm now looking for is a DOER. The dictionary definition of a doer is, "one that takes an active part." What does this look like? Someone who doesn't just understand what needs to be done and directs someone else to do it, rather, they roll up their sleeves and do it themselves. For instance, we have a young producer on our staff named Figgy Fig. He will stop everything he's doing to help a teammate out or figure out how to solve a problem, even when he doesn't exactly know how to solve it. He'll jump in the car on a Sunday and drive to the station to keep us on air. We have a woman on our staff named Erin Kapner that is the go-to for our entire team: programming, sales, engineering...doesn't matter, she will help solve, help organize, or just do it herself if it needs to be done. These people are DOERS. They're examples, but honestly, our entire team is a group of doers. We don't have room for anyone who is not. Gone are those days.

If you want to stay hired/get hired in 2023 you need to be a DOER. It's never been more important. Companies will always be hiring, just like I'm hiring now, but the things I'm looking for have changed. Showcase a doer skillset, and you're sure to succeed.

1 年"we can't have anyone here that just tells others what to do," telling is also doing, and usually more important than performing specific actions for frequently employees who "do things" do them for their benefit, not the company's. It is right thing though, to manage this issue by aligning employees' & organization benefits properly. Otherwise you still need talkers to get things done
