Do the right thing VS Do things right

Do the right thing VS Do things right

In the pursuit of business success there's often a heavy emphasis on efficiency, productivity and results. However, there's a profound difference between doing things right and doing the right thing. And in my 26 years of working with people?I’ve observed that businesses thrive not just by optimizing processes, but by making ethical decisions that align with their core values.

Let us starts with clarifying what Doing the right thing means. "Doing the right thing" involves making decisions that align with ethical principles and prioritize the well-being of stakeholders, including customers, employees and the community. It’s about integrity, fairness and responsibility in all business practices. For instance, choosing to prioritize customer satisfaction over strict adherence to a refund policy demonstrates a commitment to ethical business practices.

However, focusing solely on doing the right thing can sometimes lead to inefficiencies or challenges in maintaining consistency. Decisions based solely on ethics may overlook the importance of operational excellence and adherence to industry standards.

Doing things right emphasizes the positive experience and operational excellence & consistency and it meand that many times prioritizing procedures over innovation and customer-centric solutions will decrease adaptability to changing market demands or customer needs.

Or consider a scenario where you have the chance to cut costs by choosing a cheaper supplier. If this supplier engages in unethical labor practices opting for them might save money, but it wouldn't be the right thing to do. Choosing a more ethical supplier might cost more in the short term, but it upholds your values and strengthens your reputation in the long run ensuring your customers remain your customers.

And another one where a customer is waiting for assistance and according to procedures, they must go through a series of checkboxes, even though they have made no mistake. In this situation, doing the right thing would mean helping the customer immediately, prioritizing their satisfaction and demonstrating empathy and understanding.

Imagine another customer who is dissatisfied with a product and requests a refund slightly beyond the stated return period. Doing things right would mean strictly adhering to the refund policy and denying the request. However, doing the right thing could involve making an exception in this case to ensure customer satisfaction and maintain a positive relationship.

Or a situation where an employee consistently meets performance targets but is facing personal challenges that affect their work attendance. Doing things right might involve strictly enforcing attendance policies without consideration of the underlying circumstances. Doing the right thing, on the other hand, could involve providing support and flexibility to help the employee overcome their challenges while still meeting business objectives.

In a decision-making process within a team, doing things right might mean following a structured approach and relying solely on data and metrics. Doing the right thing could involve considering the diverse perspectives and experiences of team members, even if it means deviating slightly from the initial plan to achieve a more inclusive and innovative outcome.

Achieving sustainable success requires striking a balance between doing things right and doing the right thing. And finding that balance is essential for navigating complex business environments and achieving sustainable success.
