Do the right thing
We have a set of values at breathe that are part of our DNA but it's all too easy for values to become flat or lifeless. We try to keep them at the heart of everything we do but to bring them life I believe they need to be regularly debated and challenged.
That's why my favourite is 'Do the right thing' - it sounds simple but has so many different levels:
- Do I do the right thing by the customer, the whole team, an individual member of the team, the company etc etc.
- Sometimes the right thing to do is to do nothing.
- Your view of right might be different to mine.
- New information might cause me to question a decision taken yesterday BUT that doesn't make it wrong decision so long as it was taken with care.
Its very rare that decisions are a matter of right and wrong so our job is to consider the options, decide which is the 'most right' at the time and then live by the decision. All this makes it the hardest of our values to live up to but I hope we can always rely on it to cause open debate.

7 年I second Jamie's comment below. One of my favourites too. Doing the right thing is personally hugely important to me, but I enjoyed the thoughts provoked by the article... what is the right thing?

7 年"Integrity is doing the right thing, even when nobody is watching" - one of my favourite quotes. If you believe you've done the right thing with the information at hand, that is the only standard you can hold yourself accountable to because as you pointed out Jonathan, "the right thing" is always subjective.
