As an expert in the field of professional speaking, I am often asked whether aspiring speakers need to write a book in order to succeed. The short answer is no - writing a book is not a prerequisite for becoming a successful speaker. However, there are many compelling reasons why writing a book can help you achieve your goals as a professional speaker.

Before we dig in, if you’re not currently speaking for fees but you’re interested in exploring this highly profitable, fascinating field, take the 3-minute artificial intelligence driven Professional Speaker Assessment to see if you have what it takes to make it as a professional speaker. You’ll receive an immediate numerical score, as well as next step recommendations based on how high you score. This is driven by the latest AI technology. Get your score at?www.PaidSpeaking.org

Ok, so let’s jump in. I’m going to make this short and sweet: First and foremost, writing a book can establish you as an expert in your field. By sharing your knowledge, experience, and insights in a book, you demonstrate to your audience that you have a deep understanding of your topic and a unique perspective that can help them succeed. This can help you attract more speaking opportunities, as event planners and other professionals in your field will recognize your expertise and want to hear more from you.?

Another advantage most speakers miss is sharing deeply personal stories in their book that create an emotional connection with the reader. This is known as a “Success Memoir” and it’s one of the great secrets of book writing for speakers. Success Memoirs include dozens of personal photographs from the speaker’s life that correspond with each chapter. I’ll discuss this in more length in next weeks newsletter.?

Writing a book can also help you reach a wider audience than speaking alone. While speaking engagements are an effective way to connect with your audience, a book can reach people who may not have the opportunity to attend your speaking events. This can help you build your brand and reach more potential clients and customers.

Writing a book can also help you develop your ideas and refine your message. As you work on your book, you'll have the opportunity to explore your topic in depth and refine your approach. This can help you develop more compelling content for your speaking engagements and establish yourself as a thought leader in your field.

Of course, writing a book is not easy - it takes time, effort, and a lot of hard work. I’ve written 12 books, and it’s not an easy process. However, the benefits can be significant, both in terms of your career as a professional speaker and your personal development as an expert in your field.

Ultimately, whether or not you choose to write a book as a professional speaker depends on your goals, your audience, and your personal preferences. If you have a unique perspective on your topic and a passion for writing, a book can be a powerful tool for establishing your expertise and reaching a wider audience. However, if you prefer to focus on speaking alone, there are still many opportunities to succeed as a professional speaker without writing a book.

Many successful speakers have never written a book, not even ghostwritten. Some speakers seem to turn out a book a week, but struggle to get bookings. In my case, with 5,000+ paid engagements over the years and 30+ books, it’s certainly helped. In fact, I have called “The Closers” series my “Passport to Credibility.” And “back of the room” sales often generate more income than the honorarium itself!
