Do people leave companies or bosses?

It’s only when we dig a little deeper, perhaps at the exit interview, that we discover that the key employee that is leaving you, still loves the company and is rather sorry to be leaving. They just couldn’t take it anymore. Take what?
?Managers who have been at it for a while are finding it increasingly difficult to understand why their “tried and tested management methods” are no longer effective. Being aware that your style as a manager can be a help or a hindrance to your crew is the first step to introspect. According to DDI? 57%?of employees quit because of their boss — and?37%?reported that they’ve considered leaving because of their manager.?
So how does your style affect their performance??
Our various backgrounds and experience have an impact on how we function as managers. You could work in a certain way for years without any management training, doing what you’ve seen other managers do (telling people what to do). Then you join a different company with a different culture - and everything changes! You may find that what you did previously no longer works but hampers your relationship with your new team creating unwanted tension and threatening your survival. In addition, one size never fits all and each team member needs to be managed differently. This is typically where managers and supervisors come unstuck.?It’s a VERY uncomfortable place to be, especially when we don’t know what to do.
?According to an Accelerating Excellence Newsletter by Cornerstone Services, an estimated 40% of all managers “fail” within the first 18 months on the job. This means they will be demoted, terminated or resign. The remaining 60% may be successful in varying degrees while many perform well below expectation. Not failing does not equal success. Failure has a dramatic impact on self-esteem, confidence and future success.
?While people leave lousy bosses, not companies, it costs companies when good people leave. It could cost up to double an employee’s annual salary to replace them – that’s only the part that can be calculated.
?Leadership failure is one of the top reasons for business failure. Of course nobody plans to fail. At the root of the problem is lack of knowledge, preparation and training about how to work with people.?
Here are some tips:?
1.???? Get help! Understand why you manage people and conflict the way you do and enlist the help of a trainer / coach to break some of those destructive patterns that are driving your team out the door.
?2.???? Enlist the help of your team. Prepare for a humbling but essential experience in turning the work environment and culture around. Warning: don’t try doing this on your own! They’re not going to trust you if you go about this the wrong way. Invite feedback and expect comments like: this is an unhealthy work environment because of ineffective communication, lack of recognition, micromanagement and poor productivity.
3. All small improvements are steps towards significant personal growth and a change in your leadership approach. Do it in bite-sized chunks. However - seeing it through is essential if you want to stem the exodus and retain key employees.
Here are some benefits of getting it right:
·?????? Your crew will be more involved and engaged. They become easier to manage - more trusting.
·?????? You will make them feel better about themselves and you’ll feel better about yourself!
·?????? Productivity is sure to improve – your boss will be happier too.
·?????? You will gain recognition and move up the ladder?
