Do our Health and Safety Messages need a shake up??
In our industry we have all, at some stage, been party to the same old drony Health and Safety toolbox meeting spiel. Our Health and Safety advisors appear to all be acting on the same mandate: to make these meetings as dull as possible; which in turn makes them ineffective.
I believe pre-start meetings are the perfect window of opportunity to ensuring safe site practices and engagement from the project delivery crew. So why not utilise this time efficiently? In the few times I have switched things up in the way I get my H&S messages across, the response from the guys on the ground has been visibly different. Getting the site staff out of their comfort zones, taking more responsibility, by being involved in running their own meetings and using different visual content can be soo much more effective. I’ve also seen these approaches have enormous flow on effects in terms of overall project delivery. Check out this video of a young lad (Jordan Strong) getting involved in the H&S messages going out to his team members and tell me how effective you think this approach is?

7 年Ownership. One of the best advances I saw in H&S in a site I was involved with was the staff owning their environment. Once this sense of responsible ownership and authority to own was garnered in the staff they really began to step-up to tackle H&S issues they saw every day! The NZ asbestos sector really needs to feel this sense of risk ownership! Senior managers also need to realise that this sense of ownership cuts both ways. Managers need to learn to listen and action grass roots ideas to see meaningful benefits in culture and attitude. Great work.

7 年I have often used a rugby ball and stood in a circle as a great ice breaker...made the meeting verbal to cross those language barriers. it works a treat!! I expect that if someone has a voice it needs to be heard by everyone, sometimes the quiet ones that sit at the back have the best ideas! good luck with your studies: )

7 年Great video Daniel and I agree with this type of approach. The challenge we have is finding a way to to present the safety message across all ages, ethnicities and education levels so that it becomes a natural and on going part of daily work. Its not a one size fits all, which is usually the consultant approach. Im currently doing a Grad Diploma and it is exactly this type of approach that I want to explore and part of my studies. Thanks for the insight.
