Being aware of how others perceive you is crucial for leaders to reach their full potential. It is essential to gain clarity on how you come across to others and make positive changes to enhance their perception of you.
How do you get clarity on how you're perceived? - Seeking feedback from colleagues and superiors, continuously! Feedback and feedforward are valuable tools included in our Awake Your Potential leadership masterclass to enhance self-awareness, perception, and productivity. FeedForward makes feedback successful by shifting the focus from rehashing the mistakes of the past to concentrating on the promise of the future.?
Step 1: Get clear on how you want to be known.
What is your goal as a leader? Whether that’s a leader for your team, within your organization, or within your household. Leadership is not simply a title. We are all leaders in one way or another! Ask yourself:
Step 2: Define the behaviors.
Your brand is your personal identity - Your authentic inner and outer self. To create a consistent brand, your mindset and behaviors must be in sync. Identify what daily behaviors are supporting your aspirational brand and what behaviors are sabotaging your brand. We dive into strategies and tools on how to do this in AYP!
Step 3: Get feedback from others on how they perceive you.
We don’t live in a silo, and people can’t read our minds. Meaning, we have to interact and work with others on some level and need to clearly communicate our intention even when it might seem “clear” to us. To make sure your behaviors are aligning to how you want to be perceived, you need to get feedback from others on how you come across from their point-of-view. Whom do you ask for feedback from? - People you interact with regularly and whose opinions you value, trust, and whose opinions are important in reaching your goal.?

By openly communicating how you want to be known and getting clarity on how it’s coming across to others, you’ll be able to determine the gap from where you currently are to your goal of living your aspirational brand.
Step 4: Feedback isn’t a one-and-done. Continue to ask for feedback?
The key here is continually asking for feedback. Reach out to meet with your stakeholders once a month to get feedback on how they think you are doing and receive feedforward on what you can improve on. Remember - always thank the person for their feedback, never argue or try to make excuses for it. That’s how you are being perceived, and if you want to change that perception, get curious and ask questions to understand and find out what behaviors would change that current perception.?
By committing to this process with a select group of stakeholders on a consistent basis, leaders can gain valuable insights into how they are perceived by others and continue to identify areas for improvement. This activity will enhance self-awareness, strengthen relationships, and promote personal and professional growth.
It is essential to be open to feedback and willing to make changes to improve how you are perceived. This requires a growth mindset and a willingness to learn and grow as a leader. Leaders who are open to feedback and actively seek out opportunities for improvement are more likely to be perceived as effective and successful.
To enhance how others perceive you in the workplace, focus on developing skills such as effective communication, active listening, and emotional intelligence. We’ve designed our course, Awake Your Potential, to do just that for leaders—awaken their potential and help them level-up in how they lead themselves and others!
