Do one thing, well. Then you can do other things better.
As a guy just making observations, I urge independent event promoters and businesses to do at least this one thing really well. Clean the bathrooms perfectly. Yes, seriously, clean your bathrooms before and during and after every event. If I can trust you to do that right, it demonstrates a level of care and concern with my happiness and well-being as a customer. Your show, concert, seminar or conference will benefit from this attention to detail.?
Van Halen famously included a clause in their tour rider demanding no brown M&Ms in their dressing room supply. This was not done out of pretentiousness. This line item was placed in the middle of the tour rider to ensure that those setting up the event read and followed the stage construction guidelines to a T, optimizing safety. This ensured that even seemingly minor details were addressed properly. Do we all make mistakes? Yes. That said, we want to take affirmative steps to prevent them before they happen.?
So, I leave you with a few questions. 1. Is your parking lot clean, safe and well-lit, enabling easy entry and exit without fear of theft or assault? 2. Is everyone greeted at the door with a friendly face, grateful that you came? 3. Are people asking fans and participants and guests questions to see how their experience can be improved even further? 4. Does every seat have a clear view of the action, including good space for patrons with disabilities? And yes. 5. Is your bathroom clean?
This has nothing to do with fancy tricks, laser shows, or even great speeches. It has everything to do with removing any obstacles to a great time being had. Make the people remember the fun they, the performances they saw, and all that they learned. Make them connect with your event, talent and a great atmosphere. Craft your experience with care - not just from start to finish, but door to door.
