In the dynamic landscape of artificial intelligence (AI), we often marvel at its increasingly intricate capabilities. AI has been a game-changer, revolutionizing everything from healthcare diagnostics to personalized product recommendations. Yet, despite its sophistication, AI isn't perfect. It can be biased, just like us humans. But how do these biases emerge, and more importantly, how can we spot them?
Training Data Bias
Imagine the AI as a student, and the data it learns from as the textbooks. If the textbooks contain biased information, the student might develop skewed perceptions. Similarly, if the training data fed to an AI system contain biases, the system can produce biased results. For example, Amazon once developed an AI-powered recruiting tool intended to automate the process of reviewing job applications. However, the system favored male candidates over female ones because it was trained on resumes submitted to Amazon over a 10-year period, which came predominantly from men. The system learned that male candidates were preferable, demonstrating a clear case of training data bias.
Algorithmic Bias
On the other hand, algorithmic bias happens when the algorithms used to process and interpret data contain biased assumptions. For instance, facial recognition technology has been found to have higher error rates in identifying people with darker skin tones. This discrepancy stems from the algorithmic bias, where the algorithms work better for certain groups than others due to the ways they were designed and trained.

Given the rapid progress in AI technology, we must begin discussing how to maximise the positive potential of AI while minimising its destructive potential. Although AI raise a ethical numerous concerns apart from development and expanding capabilities for solving our day to day problems. Also behavior patterns of us are changing rapidly so in that side we need to continuously monitor the data generated by all the systems and model performance and do regularization/penalized the model based on the overconfident/bias .. its a continuous process and training , without any doubt Explainable AI is currently good to have situations but in future it's going to be must to have ??
