Do Low-Code/No-Code 'Citizen Developers' Exacerbate Shadow IT?

As the low-code/no-code movement continues to explode, skeptics look askance at the trend and wonder if we’ve been down this road before.
After all, we’ve seen plenty of ‘user productivity’ tools over the years that provided value in their day, but also led to the challenges of Shadow IT: the proverbial app running under someone’s desk – unmanaged, ungoverned, and of questionable quality.
Today, the rise of Low-Code/No-Code platforms has transformed such tools, putting increasing power and flexibility into a new cadre of ‘citizen developers.’
The million-dollar question: have we turned a page in end-user productivity, or is this whole story just shadow IT all over again?

According to the recent survey, The Rise of the Citizen Developer, by Unisphere Research and Kintone, most organizations report that citizen developers create some or all of their applications outside of the IT organization.

6 年There is no metric for how much any person doesn't know. Compare that with the Dunning-Kruger Effect and other cognitive biases, and you might have a potential problem.

6 年Aren't they by definition (Gartner etc) "good citizens" ? so following all governance processes (including IT). Low code no Code development has been around for decades; Spreadsheets with complex formula & holding vital data on MS Sharepoint (good old MS !)
