You have always wanted to become a Hotel Manager and you may think you know what to expect in your first job as a Hotel Manager? Perhaps you know Hotel Managers personally and feel like you have a good idea of what their shifts entail?
I spoke with Hotel Managers to learn about their experiences in Hospitality School and beyond. Maybe their insight can help you in your Hotel Management career?
YOU WILL BE A DIFFERENT PERSON AFTER WORKING IN A HOTEL Hotel Work is intensive and rigorous. In a Hotel your stamina and determination will be tested time and time again. Although you will come out a different person, this personal growth is all part of becoming an amazing Hotelier.
YOU MAY STRUGGLE ACADEMICALLY FOR THE FIRST TIME IN YOUR LIFE For most Hoteliers, Hotel Work is the first experience in which they work very hard academically and still may be nothing more than an average Hotel Manager. Knowing this can help you avoid the shock and focus on succeeding.
YOU WILL NEED TO DECIDE ON A SPECIALITY EARLIER THAN YOU THINK Aspiring Hotel Managers need to be thinking about long-term decisions, like which Hotel speciality they might like to pursue. Some specialities are very competitive and will require extensive planning and a highly superior performance.
HOTEL SCHOOL DOES NOT TEACH YOU HOW TO BECOME A HOTEL MANAGER Believe it or not, all the experiences of a Hotel School do not produce a Hotel Manager. Rather, a Hotel Manager emerges from experiences and practices in Hotels. Whilst Hotel School experiences are extremely valuable, very few of us ever learn how to actually practice Hotel Management in a Hotel School.
IT IS HARD TO BELIEVE HOW MUCH OF YOUR LIFE WILL BE SPENT BECOMING A HOTEL MANAGER Many aspiring Hotel Managers know it is their desired career path early on in their life. But when you are young, it is difficult to understand how many years it takes to actually become a Hotel Manager. Most Hoteliers take 15 to 20 years to truly become a Professional Practicing Hotel Manager.
YOU WILL NEVER BE FULLY PREPARED Even after all those years of training and preparation; you will never be able to know it all. Hotel Management is a Profession that will keep bringing the unexpected. Because you cannot possibly prepare for every potential scenario, a Hotel Manager’s ability to manage the unexpected under pressure will always serve them well.
