Do I Need More Than One CV?

The idea to write this article was inspired by a suggestion I gave to one of my mentees who was seeking new employment and wanted my help with his CV. The first thing I noticed was that he showed me a CV in Spanish (which makes sense as we both live in Spain), but when I asked him if that was the only version he had, he replied, "Of course it is! Do I Need More Than One CV?"

?

So, if you find yourself in a similar situation, I would suggest setting aside some time to craft different versions of your CV, following these recommendations

?

  1. Consider the language and the person who will receive your CV.

If your CV is written in Spanish, Italian, Polish, etc., can you confidently say that the reviewer understands that language? My advice is to maintain a version of your CV in English at all times, and to submit your CV in the language that matches the language of the job posting you are applying for.

?

  1. Ask yourself: in what direction do I want to go? Let's say I am a technical-sales, or an account executive willing to transition into customer success. The most important thing here is to have a clear idea of the kind of job you want to gravitate towards and create a specific CV in which you can highlight all the relevant experience and key skills that you have and that will help you out in that specific role.

?

Therefore, to sum up, my suggestion to him was: "create a minimum of two additional versions of your CV - one in English that mirrors the existing one, and another one tailored to your desired job role, also in English."

?

With that in mind, good luck with your job search and? consider to leave a comment below if you've ever used different versions of your CV, or if you found this article valuable to you!
