Do I have to be rich to move abroad?

Well the recent US Presidential debate was… eye-opening. Jon Stewart even mentioned finding a good realtor in New Zealand within the first 10 minutes of his post-debate coverage. (We’ve got someone for that, by the way, if New Zealand seems like the right move).
A lot of us watched that and thought can I move abroad and how soon? Can I get out in time for the election? How soon after?
This week, I want to act as a myth buster to the one question I get asked the most: Do I have to be rich to move abroad.
Seriously, can we get out of here? YES
Don’t you have to be rich to move abroad? NO!
Let’s be clear - it’s much MUCH easier to move abroad when you can pay relocation consultants, movers, real estate agents, airfare, taxis and more to help you get it all right the first time.
If you don’t have deep pockets, you can still move abroad. You just have to be very resourceful, and you need to do a lot of work on your own. Let’s look at all the stuff you need to figure out for a move abroad:
Job Stuff
You need to figure out where your skillset is attractive to another country’s job market or where you have more economic power. An attractive career / skillset can be one in short supply in your target country (engineer, teacher, nurse, and many others), or a job at a multinational that will let you relocate, or your native language is needed in that country. Having more economic power seems oppressive, but it’s the idea that you move where your money goes further: Mexico, Thailand, Argentina even Portugal and Spain. You can live off much less in those places.?
Less stuff?
Speaking of less - the less financial support you have to move abroad, the less you should bring. Reduce what you own, become a minimalist so that you don’t have to pay to ship your stuff or store your stuff, or get an apartment large enough to hold your stuff. In short, get rid of most of your stuff.?
Visa stuff
Get knowledgeable about available visas.? Digital nomad visa, Non-lucrative visa, work visa, residency, student visa are the most common across more affordable relocation options. Know what country or two you want to move to and figure out what visas they have that you can probably successfully apply for.?
There are many ways to move abroad without being rich, famous or marrying yourself off to a local.?
Queer stuff
If you are LGBTQ+ or an ally, you might only want to relocate to countries that have friendly laws and culturally aren’t shifting too far right. Start here, here and here with that information.??

4 个月Good question. My experience with 1000s of clients moving to NZ suggests it’s a matter of 1) planning and 2) spending money on what will really impact your success when you relocate. That’s going to vary from person to person, but I agree being wealthy is not a prerequisite. Thanks for the ?? shout-out btw!
