Do I have to make efforts to manage my Manager?
Yes, at least for the first year...
While I admit seeing loads (and Increasing number) of unqualified managers, yet I still believe big part of the relationship equation lies in the hands of the subordinate, I have came across so many subordinates that were willing to leave the company because of their managers without exerting any "Right" efforts to manage the relationship.
Everyone needs to exert efforts to:
1- Know his Manager
Know his way of thinking. His leadership style. Personality traits. Appreciate his accumulated experience, The pressure he is going through himself.
2- Align with him
Get aligned with manager's priorities. Communicate efficiently. Involve him. Relate to company's objectives. Give him alternatives. Set clear expectations & regularly revise them.
Again, I know there are too many unprofessional managers out there, but for the average ones decoding them might help.
May be unpopular opinion but eventually... Just a different Perspective...!!
