Do I have to be a developer to test accessibility? ??

Nope. You don't have to be an expert to test basic accessibility aspects of a website.

Whether you're a designer, content manager, board member, project manager, [ADD TITLE HERE] or just interested in the topic, all you need for basic testing is a browser and this checklist:

It includes the following items:

  • Page title
  • Image text alternatives ("alt text")

Text

  • Headings
  • Contrast ratio ("color contrast")
  • Resize text

Interaction

  • Keyboard access and visual focus
  • Forms, labels and errors

General

  • Moving, flashing or blinking content
  • Multimedia (video, audio) alternatives
  • Basic structure check

From a developer's point of view I can say that most of the problems can be avoided or easily fixed during development (depending on the size of the project). However, in the area of "Interaction" it can be a bit more complex to have a problem, because here the design team can be involved.

The same applies to "General": Here, too, it is necessary to work closely with the design team or even the customer. In the best case, you can implement the vision and still take important accessibility points into account.

If it is clear from the start that the product is to be used by as many people as possible, it must be as accessible as possible. For this, it is important that everyone in the team works together, not just the developers. In the best case, all the checks on this list will then be successful. ?
