This state of the art country kitchen design evolved from listening to the client and her interior designer Gwynneth Jones who brought me in to design this challenging space! Gwynneth focused on opening the spaces to update the seventeen hundreds home. She created beautiful remodeled spaces, furnishings and finishes. You can see a bit of her family room work from the shot above. The kitchen was also in need of an update with old partial overlay country blue doors and a very clunky island that hindered proper flow.
Living in the country is not new to the homeowners, but for one, living in the US is. American husband and the British wife are raising two adorable and busy little boys in Redding. Wanting some of the familiarity of British country living, we deliberately incorporated details that echoed homeland into the design such as the ceramic farm sink shown above. This young family also selected all of the conveniences of high end modern appliances!
Here I designed the cabinetry using Signature Custom Cabinetry. The construction is inset with a recessed panel door style. The simple shaker style door I modified with fuller stiles and rails to provide that country look and by alternating flush toe kicks and furniture legs also helped to achieve details and the country look the client was after. Adding subzero drawers at the end of the island offers quick access to snacks and drinks for the boys! The pretty green island was a color the client identified with her British roots. Bringing memories together with color really connects the homeowner personally to the space.
This distressed butternut island top with bread board ends is complete with natural wormholes! A Raging River work of art, it really warms up the space and will patina further over time! The simplicity of the ultra modern Gaggenau induction cook top and sleek lines of the exhaust hood really allows that feature counter to take all the glory!
An antique home comes with its set of challenges. Architectural obstructions like the back of the dining room chimney and a supporting pillar that could not reasonably be moved or replaced with a steel beam are just a few obstacles to work with. I solved the chimney issue by creating a pair of armoire style storage pieces on legs. One operable and the other false! This allowed a lovely glass display area between the two areas.
The original kitchen had a gigantic deep island that caused a function problem for this space. I totally reconfigured the space by borrowing from closet space for the refrigerator and taking a few inches from the family room to accommodate a proper island and work perimeter. Now the work stations are functional and beautiful. The back splash is textured hand made ceramic tiles from Pratt & Larson that add a subtle bit of charm along with the warm touch of the antiqued brass cabinet hardware! Details, details...
