Do the Hard Things: Secrets to Success & Balance

Do the Hard Things: Secrets to Success & Balance

Welcome to Law Life #17, where we delve into the transformative power of embracing challenges and the delicate balance between hard work and personal well-being.

The Foundation of Success: Embracing Challenges

In the legal profession, as in life, the path to success is often paved with challenges. It's easy to seek the path of least resistance, but true growth and achievement come from doing the hard things – the tasks others avoid or the opportunities that seem daunting at first glance.

My Law Life journey has been a testament to this principle. From my early days as a prosecutor to becoming a certified criminal trial attorney and co-founding a law firm, each step forward required embracing new challenges and pushing beyond my comfort zone.

Saying Yes When Others Say No

One of the pivotal moments in my career came on New Year's Eve almost a decade ago. I received an unexpected call to provide legal commentary on Fox News. Despite my inexperience with live television and the holiday timing, I said YES when others declined.

This decision to embrace the unknown opened doors I never imagined. It was my entry into an industry I had only dreamed of while watching Court TV during law school. Now, I've had thousands of appearances across networks like Court TV, HLN, Fox Business Network, and more.

The lesson? Sometimes, the most significant opportunities come disguised as inconvenient timing or challenging circumstances.

The Value of Hard Work and Persistence

In today's world of instant gratification and endless distractions, it's easy to forget the value of hard work. But it's precisely this investment—in yourself, your business, and your relationships—that opens doors you never thought possible.

After leaving the prosecutor's office, I joined forces with my law partner, Bob Bianchi, to establish our firm. This venture demanded courage, perseverance, and countless work hours beyond practicing law. We faced challenges in managing finances, marketing, building client relationships, and continually educating ourselves on evolving legal landscapes. Each hurdle was an opportunity for growth, pushing us to become better lawyers and successful business owners.

The Necessity of Hard Work in Personal Growth

As I reflected in my TEDx talk on Reclaiming Time and following my Inner Counsel, the effort, experience, and devotion to growing as a lawyer and public speaker have been essential. This journey has sharpened my focus on the critical importance of time management and eliminating distractions.

The hard work – taking on challenging tasks and pushing beyond our comfort zones – is where we grow, improve, and learn the most.

It was necessary to put in extra effort, staying late, writing briefs for senior attorneys, meticulously preparing exhibit lists, and working on holidays when others said no. This work is the work of growth and improvement.

Reclaiming Time: The Balance of Hard Work and Life

My perspective on work-life balance transformed after a pivotal experience at Petco Park with Ed Mylett in 2020. I realized that while the experience gained through hard work was necessary, distractions were not. This realization has reshaped my understanding of work-life balance:

1. The work is necessary – how we grow, learn, and achieve our goals.

2. The life part is necessary – it gives meaning to our efforts and keeps us grounded.

3. What's unnecessary are the distractions – the time-wasters that neither contribute to our growth nor enrich our personal lives.

This perspective has been transformative. I've found a more fulfilling balance by embracing the hard work required for professional growth while consciously eliminating unnecessary distractions. It's not about working less; it's about working with purpose and intent and then fully engaging in life outside of work without the clutter of meaningless distractions.

The Secret to Success and Balance

The secret to success and balance in the legal profession lies in this delicate equilibrium:

  1. Embrace the hard things: Take on challenges that push you out of your comfort zone. These are the experiences that will propel your career forward.
  2. Invest in yourself: Continuous learning and skill development are non-negotiable. Whether it's pursuing certifications, like becoming a certified criminal trial attorney or seizing opportunities for public speaking, never stop growing.
  3. Say yes to opportunities: When unique chances arise, even if they seem daunting or inconvenient, consider saying yes. These could be the turning points in your career.
  4. Work with purpose: Make every hour count. Focus on tasks that genuinely contribute to your goals and growth.
  5. Eliminate distractions: Relentlessly cutting out activities that don't serve your professional or personal development.
  6. Prioritize life outside work: Remember that personal time is not a luxury; it's a necessity for sustainable success and fulfillment.
  7. Collaborate and learn from others: As I found in partnering with Bob Bianchi, combining strengths can lead to more tremendous success than going it alone.

Conclusion: The Reward of Doing Hard Things

In the legal profession, our willingness to do what others won't—to put in the extra hours, take on challenging cases, and seize unexpected opportunities—sets us apart. It's not about instant success but building a foundation of experience and resilience to serve us throughout our careers.

Remember, every expert was once a beginner. The key is to start, to say yes to the hard things, and to embrace the journey, no matter how challenging it may seem. By doing so while being mindful of maintaining balance and eliminating unnecessary distractions, you can achieve success and fulfillment in your legal career.
