Do not falter when passing the baton: Part - 1

Do not falter when passing the baton: Part - 1

Why pass the baton?

I used to find it very difficult to stay put when somebody in the team was assigned work that I was skilled at. Whenever possible I did those tasks myself. This ensured timely finish and proper completion of tasks - at least that's what I saw. It gave me a lot of satisfaction in doing good work and getting appreciated.?

Several years later when I switched to an entrepreneurial role and had to get others to accomplish tasks, I had to learn to restrain myself from doing things myself and guide or help others to complete their tasks properly and timely.?

The?key thoughts?that motivated me to change my behaviour were

  1. Achieving perfection at the cost of missing deadlines was not useful. And the perceived level of perfection might be meaningless to concerned parties.?
  2. I didn't have infinite time to do everything myself.?
  3. Doing things by myself made others in the team dependent and lowered their morale.?
  4. If I got bogged down in doing the same things I was limiting the possibilities of personal as well as organizational growth.
  5. Enabling others to learn and improve could build their trust and support for me as a leader.
  6. Building capabilities of the team had bigger chances of scaling and sustaining the organization in the long run.

The above points make a strong case for entrepreneurs to support the development of others around them so that they can succeed as future leaders and manage their organizations satisfactorily.?

How to pass the baton will be shared next in Part-2.???

Succession planning should be proper, otherwise it can result into a debacle.
