Do Employees with a strong music background make better employees?

Recently a lot of schools are in the talks to give more emphasis on extracurricular activities of students such as music, dancing etc.. This has raised a lot of questions on the minds of parents who have come up with questions like “What good can music education do for my child?” “Is it really worth spending that extra amount on the school fees for something like music? “Will music education help my child’s career in the long run?” As a parent myself, I gave this a good thought and have come up with a conclusion that music education will definitely help shape my child’s professional career. Here’s why -

Musicians think out of the box

It’s no secret that the majority of the modern corporate world is filled with employees who have the same thought process and are often afraid of getting out of their comfort zone to think out of the box. Musicians on the other hand are programmed to think differently. You can’t have 10 songs in an album sounding the exact same way. Experimentation and a fresh approach to challenges are two things that are deeply etched in the minds of musicians. This helps musicians bring out fresh and creative ideas at their workplace.

Musicians are usually perfectionists

Learning an instrument requires a lot of focus and perfection. There are times where the difference between two very different sounding chords can simply be how you slide your pinky on the guitar fret-board. That’s the level of detail required to play a musical instrument. Children who learn to play an instrument at a young age develop this thought process of perfection and attention to detail which in turn helps them to be a perfectionist at their jobs. This helps them deliver quality work.

The ability to learn from their failures and never give up

Learning to play a simple major chord can be a challenging task. It takes hours of practice, patience and persistence for a musician to be familiar with, let alone master a single song on an instrument. This makes them immune to the feeling of failure and the urge to give up which is extremely important when you are working in a highly competitive, fast paced environment.

Musicians are great at taking criticism and implementing it

Musicians are hungry to get to the next level of their playing skill. After every music course, you have to face a jury which is extremely strict. As much as they hate criticism, musicians crave for it because they treat those as guidelines to help them reach the next level of performance. The ability to take constructive criticism and act on it is something that is very crucial when it comes to professional life. Often, employees and professionals get upset with feedback but musicians have the ability to extract the value from them and better their performance at work.

Musicians are great collaborators

Nobody understands collaboration better than musicians. When a band performs, each member plays a key role in the performance. Every member, vocalist or instrumentalist is an unavoidable crucial part of the act. The crew understands the importance of each other and there is no scope of ego coming in between. This is key when it comes to working in a team. Every team member in every department plays a key role in the overall performance of the team. When they fail, they fail together and when they win, they win together. The maturity to understand this is what makes a great team member.

It all depends on the way it’s taught

With all that being said, is music education in schools often effective? There is a lot of research that has been published by leading colleges, documenting the benefits of music education, starting from an early age. However it's not about just having a music program, it's about teaching the language in an effective curriculum format which progresses grade wise. Music is something that has to be taught with passion and a lot of love. Teachers have to make sure that each note taught in the class strikes the chords of the hearts of the children.

We live and breathe music at Furtados School Of Music. With a lot of research and years of successful execution and experience, we have put together a unique music learning content.
