I will try to give you the Pro's and con's of doing a project on your own- Pro's - you get a good hands-on on a practical implementation of some concepts that you would have learnt. You always stand in a better position to answer about your project and your learnings out of it when asked in an interview (if its going on your CV it's better to know it well). You stand the chance to impress the interviewers with your dedication and knowledge of your project. Remember they check your attitude when they plan to recruit.
Con's - You don't waste time. But you have a lot of time in engineering to actually call it a waste of time. So I don't see any disadvantage in doing it judiciously. You never know it might turn out to be the only differentiating factor between you and the other potential candidates the company is looking at. The reason behind including a project in curriculum is to help students develop practical ability and knowledge about solving real life problems.
It is good to put in the effort but it should be in the right direction. A project is an excellent way to learn something new and improve your existing knowledge. The confidence that you get after successfully completing a project will hold you in good stead going forward in your chosen field. Lastly, some important points to consider from an Academic Perspective: Projects help you showcase your individual talents and expertise in your area of study. A well planned and well executed project will set you apart; consider it as the first step towards your career goal. Choose a project that you would enjoy doing and not just for the sake of a degree.

It's very very important remember this is the only time you will put your practical ideas so use it properly. Another thing is don't buy project from anyone because many of the engineering students have this habit of buying their final year project from consultancies your friends might be doing but please don't follow them it's not at all professional. I know choosing a project and then work on it might be difficult but that's the challenge just consult with your project guide also you can speak with R&D Department of your college they can help you out. If you have any other queries kindly go through one of my recent comment link below regarding engineering project. I hope that you are satisfied with my answer so wish you all the best.
There are N number of possibilities for major projects in mechanical engineering. And it totally depends on your budget, team, and most importantly, your will to work on it. It is good to hear that you are actually willing to work on it rather than purchasing it from market. So I would like to share some of my experiences from my major project. First of all, finding a project is not a difficult task. All you need is to browse Internet for some hours, and u will be flooded with many ideas.
Secondly, theory regarding the project is also not difficult to find. You will find all the technical data and steps to construct there fairly easily. As I found it. Third, Is it always a safe to keep a plan "B" if you are making project yourself. As if you fail, u can at least save your grades. Fourth, mechanical projects are not constructed inside the luxury of an air-conditioned room. You actually have to roam on streets biting the dust for materials, welding, cutting, lathe working etc etc. actually. Cheers!
