Do Coaches Need Qualifications?

"I have been a coach for many years and seen styles come and go – Julia has a group of coaches who do not have the ILM qualification or the Association of Coaching yet they have something much more!"

This is what one of the attendees said who attended a taster session I run on Coaching With Horses to celebrate International Coaching Week.

She went on to say: "The coaches ‘Charlie and Co’ were incredible. I have never been coached by a horse yet Charlie got my issue spot on – I need to make space between me and something pretty major in my life.  He got it!  How, I will never know, yet he knew exactly what I needed, even when I did not really know what I needed.  If a one off taster session can have that much impact I am keen to experience a full day."

So why are horses such powerful coaches?

The great thing about learning from horses is that you will learn how to synchronise your intention – mentally, emotionally and physically. You will also get unbiased, immediate feedback on your connection skills. And importantly if what you are doing isn't working you get the opportunity to recalibrate and try a different approach. Interacting without verbal communication allows participants to discover a whole new world in the process!

Working with horses demands that you be very clear in your leadership and communication both verbal and non-verbal. Since horses do not understand words they therefore rely on reading your body language and energy. This enables participants to experience how to align their energy in such a way that their ability to connect becomes clear and concise.

Horses Connect on an Emotional Level

Contrary to learning in the classroom where participants are engaged in their rational thinking (head-based), training with horses opens up the emotional state of people (heart-based), which is important to ensure the transfer of learning and embodiment of leadership practices. Horses are masters at teaching emotional intelligence which is ranked as one of the top ten skills required by leaders (World Economic Forum)

According to Daniel Goleman in Harvard Business Review article “What makes a great leader” he noted that: "The most effective leaders are all alike in one crucial way: they all have a high degree of what has come to be known as emotional intelligence. It’s not that IQ and technical skills are irrelevant. They do matter, but…they are the entry-level requirements for executive positions. My research, along with other recent studies, clearly shows that emotional intelligence is the sine qua non of leadership. Without it, a person can have the best training in the world, an incisive, analytical mind, and an endless supply of smart ideas, but he still won’t make a great leader”,

BEWARE: coaching with horses creates sustainable behavioural change.

Yesterday I enjoyed learning more about Julia and the beautiful environment in which she offers her team activities. Some clever links across from horses (I know very little about!) to the way teams and leaders work (I know a little bit more about!). Great alternative venue too in North Yorks
